Just to follow up on our post yesterday, Rep. Marie Newman trolled her neighbor, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, over her opposition to the Equality Act by putting up a “Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door”:
Our neighbor, @RepMTG, tried to block the Equality Act because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is “disgusting, immoral, and evil.”
Thought we’d put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door ??️⚧️ pic.twitter.com/dV8FatQFnx

In response, Rep. Greene put up a sign that said, “There are two genders: Male & Female” and “Trust the science!” with an accompanying tweet that said the “‘Equality’ Act” will “destroy women’s rights and religious freedoms”:
Our neighbor, @RepMarieNewman, wants to pass the so-called "Equality" Act to destroy women’s rights and religious freedoms.

And then this led to Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who voted to strip Rep. Greene of her committee assignments over her past comments, to tweet that “this video and tweet represents the hate and fame driven politics of self-promotion at all evil costs”:

This is sad and I’m sorry this happened. Rep. Newmans daughter is transgender, and this video and tweet represents the hate and fame driven politics of self-promotion at all evil costs. This garbage must end, in order to #RestoreOurGOP https://t.co/gcPZ5Cu7Vr

For starters, this is rich coming from the member of Congress most likely to be on MSNBC engaging in, you know, self-promotion. But maybe he can tell us what he disagrees with in regard to her opposition to the Equality Act?
I think the sign thing is dumb, but does Kinzinger believe there are more than two genders? How many genders is the 'restored GOP' going to believe in? https://t.co/sW45Nc37iq

You see, Rep. Kinzinger also opposes the Equality Act and he even voted against it in 2019:
he opposed the Equality Act, too. https://t.co/ubOGeokkok

ThinkProgress called him out on it at the time:
These 25 Republicans should have known better about the Equality Act
Employment, housing, and public accommodations laws in their states already protect LGBTQ citizens.
And:
Notably, 25 of the Republican members who voted no represent constituents who are already protected by state LGBTQ-inclusive state employment, housing, and public accommodation laws. None of those states have experienced the kinds of repercussions Equality Act opponents
have warned might happen if protections were passed at the federal level.
The bill did pass the House back then:
BREAKING: The House of Representatives has passed the historic #EqualityAct.
It’s the first time a chamber of Congress has approved a comprehensive LGBTQ civil rights bill that would finally provide clear, nationwide protections for LGBTQ people throughout daily life. pic.twitter.com/ObFmVv3woE

So, has Rep. Kinzinger changed his position?
Many of us oppose the Equality Act’s overreach. We can and should express critiques with kindness and tolerance, not gratuitous cruelty.

More here on what’s wrong with the bill:
The Equality Act is a first-of-its-kind statute that limits the reach of RFRA.
Unlike any other law of its type, it would require that there be *no* RFRA protections in housing, education, public services, and lending. This outright attack on religion should not be passed. https://t.co/UHniVwLrEj

It is obviously possible for the rights of LGBTQ Americans and the rights of religious Americans (not to meniton the rights of LGBTQ Americans who are religious!) to coexist.
This attempt to stamp out RFRA cannot be allowed. It is the first step to abolishing RFRA entirely.
