All Gave Some, Some Gave All: Some of My Favorite Tributes Honoring Memorial Day

AP Photo/Andrew Harnik

It is often difficult to express my feelings about Memorial Day each year. I have 'Grateful' as part of my pen name and X handle, but gratitude doesn't even begin to cover it. Pride, humility, solemnity, patriotism, and inspiration all just jumble together into a nearly inexpressable emotion. All I know is that my heart swells every year remembering those who did not come home, and those to whom we owe everything.

I saw some amazing tributes to the fallen on Memorial Day yesterday, including a heartwrenching and heartwarming testimonial from our own Mindy to her uncle, Major Kenneth Paul Tanner

Yes, there were also some Democrats who messed the whole thing up, like Joe Biden and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, but we expect that from them. At least no one said 'Enjoy the long weekend,' like the oblivious Kamala Harris did as Vice President

But even though we cover such disgraceful and shameful posts at Twitchy, personally, I try not to focus on them too much on Memorial Day. I prefer to give my attention to those who understand what the day is all about.

But since I DO often struggle to put into words my feelings on Memorial Day, this year, I thought I would ask users on X for an assist. And X delivered, big time.

The following are some of my favorite tributes from yesterday. Some are just a brief statement, some are images, some are long posts, and some are videos, but all of them show the utmost honor and respect to those who are gone but not forgotten.

And all of them moved me. I hope they will move our readers, too.

I will try to keep my commentary brief and mostly let these posts speak for themselves.

The original author of that quote is unknown, but it provides a great accompaniment to some striking and breathtaking artwork.

Even 2000 years before the birth of America, Greek lyric poet Simonides understood the debt of honor we owe our fallen soldiers.

It's what we all were thinking about.

Of course, there were many posts from servicemembers who remembered the brothers and sisters they lost.

Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Nerove offered a video testimonial along with some advice for the day for the rest of us.

Jon Gabriel offered a touching tribute to some of the unsung heroes of World War II.

The Silent Service had the highest casualty percentage of any American forces in the War: about 20%.

This
#MemorialDay, raise a glass to all those men who remain on eternal patrol.

Gone but definitely still honored in our memory.

'Thank you' doesn't begin to describe it, but thank you, Ian.

The Scripture that Dana Loesch is citing here reads as follows:

'Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.'

Many politicians honored the day much more appropriately than some of the Democrats I listed at the top of this article.

The post from Governor DeSantis, a Navy veteran, continues:

As our Founding Fathers understood, liberty is not granted by government but bestowed by God.  It is, though, up to We the People to secure this liberty — by upholding the Constitution, by fostering a strong civic culture, and by producing leaders who are willing to make great sacrifices on behalf of others.

The truth is you can have the best Declaration of Independence and the best Constitution, but these do not run on autopilot.  Without citizens willing to put on the uniform, risk their lives and even give their lives for our country, lofty ideals and an ingenious system of government would ultimately not stand the test of time.

Much will be said in honor of our fallen heroes, but none of those words could ever speak louder than the headstones in places like Arlington National Cemetery.  What truly honors the fallen are deeds — whether it be from an individual voter or a public official in high office — that vindicate their great sacrifices.

God bless the memory of those who gave the last full measure of devotion in service to the United States of America.

An important, essential reminder of who it is that protects the dream of America.

There was at least one elected Democrat who understood the day. Namely, Senator John Fetterman.

He sets a far better example than many of his colleagues.

It is disheartening how much the left irrationally hates Melania Trump, but she always rises to be the bigger person, especially on Memorial Day.

President Trump followed up on this video from The White House account with one from his own:

'They gave everything and we owe them everything, and much, much more ... Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving America the brightest light in your lives.'

Well said.

Writer Salena Zito, who has a true gift for words, provided the following tribute:

On a sunny spring day, a lone figure held a tiny flag blowing vigorously in the wind as he knelt before a headstone. He held a conversation with a lost service member, perhaps a son or daughter, alternating between amusement and grief.

Taps played from off in the distance.

Only the heartless could fail to be touched by the raw emotion of that moment or by the somber presence of all of these soldiers who died serving our nation through the ages.

Today is the day that we as a country honor Americans who put their lives and their loves on hold, stepped forward to say “Send me, I will go,” and never came back.
#MemorialDay

Perhaps one of the most touching tributes of the day came from retired Air Force Colonel and combat veteran Rob Maness, who offered an original poem:

No thought of themselves, no pause for their gain,
They marched through the fire, through anguish and pain.
With honor their compass, integrity’s flame,
Each soul bore the weight of America’s name.

Selfless, they stood, where the brave dare to go,
In fields torn by thunder, in deserts’ harsh glow.
From beaches of Normandy to mountains afar,
They carved out our freedom beneath every star.

Sacrifice whispers in valleys below,
Where crosses stand silent, where poppies now grow.
Their lives laid down freely, no bargain, no debt,
For liberty’s promise, their sun forever set.

We owe them our vigilance, our hearts, and our fight,
To guard what they gave us through day and through night.

Their integrity binds us, their courage our call,
To live for the truth, and to never let fall.

So raise up the flag, let it wave proud and high,
For the ones who gave all ‘neath the vast, open sky.

Their duty, our beacon; their honor, our guide;
For America’s fallen, our tears and our pride.

Simply beautiful.

These pictures, videos, poems, and other tributes are just a few of the thousands of posts yesterday honoring Memorial Day in the right way. I hope that some of them touched our readers as much as they touched me.

I can think of no more fitting way to end this tribute than with a performance of Echo Taps by the United States Marine Corps Band.

God bless them all.

And God bless America.
