Oh, Honey No: Why Joy Reid's Attempt at Quoting J.R.R. Tolkien Was an EPIC Faceplant

I often wonder what it must be like inside Joy Reid's head. No, seriously. (I am not weird. Shut up!)

Not just to be mind-numbingly ignorant, but to be so arrogant and cocky about her ignorance. That is an astounding combination and probably should be studied by the world's foremost psychiatrists. To be able to say incomprehensibly stupid things and never have a moment of self-reflection no matter how often millions of people tell her that she is incomprehensibly stupid.

You have to admire it a little bit in a twisted way. (You don't have to admire her unbridled racism, though.)

This weekend on BlueCry ... err ... BlueSky, Reid decided that she would lecture all of the diaper fetishists on that platform about President Trump becoming a 'king.' And what an epic fail it turned out to be.

First of all, this is just another silly boogeyman made up by the left. There is not a single Trump voter or member of the Trump administration who seriously wants or thinks he should be a king (OK, maybe Laura Loomer, but that's about it). But it sure is a fun topic to troll the left about. It becomes even funnier in light of the fact that none of them have a sense of humor.

The quote she is referring to, of course, is from the Fellowship of the Ring movie at the Council of Elrond when Boromir is told for the first time who Aragorn truly is, the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor. Boromir is proud of his people, who had lived without a king for nearly a thousand years but still never faltered in their fight against Sauron.

But the point of the quote is that Boromir was wrong. Gondor DID need a king, someone who could lead its people to victory and peace.

What makes Reid's misquote even more ignorant (and funny) is that she clearly didn't watch The Fellowship of the Ring to the end. If she had, she would know that at the conclusion of THAT VERY SAME MOVIE, just before his death (sorry, spoiler alert), Boromir recognizes that he was wrong and pledges his dying allegiance to Aragorn, the rightful king.

'I would have followed you, my brother ... my Captain ... my King.'

It is one of the most poignant scenes in the movie (again, that line is not in the books), thanks to Sean Bean's wonderful portrayal of Boromir recovering his honor and having his eyes and mind opened after being tempted by the One Ring.

And it has been quoted throughout popular culture for the entire 24 years since the movie was released.

Way to have your finger on the pulse, Joy.

Someone also might want to clue her in on what the title of the third movie (and book) in the trilogy is called.

Here's a hint for her: It wasn't called 'Return of the Jedi.'

Reid also failed to see the comparison between the final years of the stewardship of Gondor without a king and ... ahem ... the past four years in the United States.

The stewardship of Gondor ended with an obviously incompetent but endlessly self-important dotard self-immolating over the body of his zonked-out youngest son.

HA. See? I'm not the only one who thinks Reid's brain needs to be analyzed.

I tend to take bastardizations of Tolkien a little personally (don't get me started on Rings of Power; we'll be here all afternoon). He is one of my greatest heroes as a writer, not just for the volume of his work and the vast legendarium he created but also for how his Catholic faith guided all that he did. And while you can see it throughout his writing, it never comes across as heavy-handed. You actually have to study it to understand the allegorical parallels. But once you see them, you can't unsee them.

Tolkien was so persuasive in his faith that he even converted one of his best friends, C.S. Lewis, to Christianity. Based on their talks, Lewis, who had previously dismissed Christianity as a mythology like that of ancient Greece, only went on to be probably the most influential Christian writer of the 20th century.

Tolkien was able to do this because he was passionate about his faith. And also because he was knowledgable about it. He knew what he was talking about, and he was able to argue with conviction.

The reason Reid is always just so completely wrong about everything, including Tolkien, is that she has no depth of knowledge about any topic. And there is only one thing she is passionate about: herself.

What makes it funny, though, is how she is never able to recognize it because of her complete dearth of self-awareness. (She still hasn't deleted or even corrected her BlueSky post.) So, she has to come out and remind us over and over again -- ad nauseam -- about how dumb she is.

I would call her a 'fool of a Took,' but that is an insult to Pippin (who Gandalf actually liked a lot more in the books than the movies showed).

She's not even good enough to be called Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, who eventually woke up to how deceived she had been by Saruman during the Scouring of The Shire (which sadly did not make it into the movies).

If there is any comparison for Reid in The Lord of the Rings, perhaps the most appropriate one is Gríma Wormtongue, a man whose mind had become so poisoned by Saruman's lies and temptations that all he did was whisper that same poison into the ears of his king Théoden and work to destroy the country in which he lived, just for personal gain.

Sound familiar?

If that doesn't sum her up pretty succinctly, I don't know what does.

But leave the Tolkien references alone, Joy Reid. You are not worthy of them.
