The recent dustup over the banning of some journalist accounts by Elon Musk in response to his plane’s real-time location data being shared, is shining a light on the hypocrisy of many who enjoyed the old rules of Twitter. In a recent thread, Sean Davis of The Federalist noted another group whose response is less-than-consistent on the issue: the Liz Cheney, Lincoln Project, Expert™, ‘lose gracefully’ folks who once claimed to be conservative but now mostly spend their days trying to elect Democrats.
All we wanted was one set of rules. Rules that allowed us to say things like, "Men can't become women," or "universal mail-in balloting seems sketchy," or linking a New York Post story about the corrupt foreign business dealing's of a Democrat candidate's 50-year-old son. (1/x)

The conservative gripe about Twitter, and speech in general, has always been about the double standard.
While we were feverishly fighting that battle, scores of court eunuchs on the Right joined hands with the Left and screeched about how Twitter and Facebook and Google can ban and censor whoever they want because muh private company and also because Trump is icky. (2/x)

‘Just build your own Twitter’ they would tell us, knowing full well it wasn’t that simple.
They also dismissed the reality that the reach of the Left extends outside of Twitter. It didn’t stop at censoring a Twitter account. They’d find your employer and try to get your fired. They’d try to harm your business. They’d harass you in public and at home.
When the New York Post, which was founded by Alexander Hamilton, was banned (along with anyone who shared its reporting on Hunter Biden), many of these same people shrugged at best or sided with the Left and its lies about NYP's reporting at worst. (3/x)

‘Hunter Biden’s not running for President’, they’d bleat in unison.
When the sitting president of the United States was banned from Twitter and Facebook after posting a video calling for peace and denouncing violence, the self-declared free speech warriors busted out their soapboxes and lectured on the propriety of Big Tech's censorship. (4/x)

The TDS among the Lincoln Project types is much stronger than it is even among many on the Left.
The Babylon Bee ban, in which a Christian satire site was banned for calling a man a man, was also illustrative. Oh, sure it's troubling, they tut-tutted. But what can you do? Twitter's a private company, and also mocking insane trans ideology is mean. (5/x)

Nobody would have questioned you for saying a man is a man ten years ago. Now it’s ‘hate speech’ and ‘dangerous’. Within a decade, millennia of common sense was tossed out the window and deemed hateful. Conservative, Inc. sat back and scolded the base for wasting time on ‘the culture war’ … while the Left continued to fight and win ground in the culture war.
And then there's the ongoing, coordinated banning and shadow-banning of millions of normal people whose only crime is not going along with whatever narrative is being jammed down the country's throat by the current regime. Where was the plea for fairness for them? (6/x)
— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) December 16, 2022
Let’s be clear, those voices have always been an embarrassment to the Bill Kristol crowd. They just wanted their votes, not their opinions.
Years and years of censorship of their own readers and contributors barely rated a yawn, but when suddenly a handful of left-wing journos get busted for doxxing that led to Musk's kid getting attacked? WELL NOW. Suddenly their principles require them to say something. (7/x)
— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) December 16, 2022
We’re starting to think their ‘principles’ are whatever they need them to be at the time to attack any brand of conservatism that’s not devoted to slow surrender.
When people describe conservatism as a defeat mechanism, or as progressivism driving the speed limit, this is what they are talking about. Standing athwart history, yelling, "I'm not like those other icky people on the right. I'm one of the Good Ones™." (8/x)

He really nails it here. There are a group of people on the Right, many of whom ran the GOP for decades who just wanted to present the façade of opposition while still enjoying cocktail hour with their leftist counterparts in D.C. The rabble in the party, those of us who actually believe this conservatism stuff, were just a necessary evil to achieve that goal.
That’s why they hated Trump. He took that control from them, and they’re terrified they’re not going to get it back. Anyone who gets in their way … Trump, DeSantis, Elon Musk … anyone, is going to earn their ire.
At some point it becomes obvious the only real motivating principle of so many of the so-called Right is a desperation to be liked by the very people who spend their every waking moment working to make sure you have no voice, no job, no church, no guns, and no freedom. (9/9).

Boom. Great thread. It could use an eagle screech at the end.

LOL, you probably could have read this tweet to us and we could have guessed it was written by Kurt.
The same rules apply to everyone and conservatives fight the Left instead of helping them. That’s all we ask for.
