We already reported to you that Elon Musk finally pulled the plug on the legacy verified blue checks and many of them completely wigged out. We also told you that Stephen King, who complained about the idea of having to pay for his blue check, still had his after the Great Blue Check Purge of 2023.
We suggested it was going to be fun because either Stephen King was dutifully paying his $8 per month for his blue check, or Musk was trolling him by paying for it himself.
Well, you don’t have to wait in suspense any longer!
My Twitter account says I’ve subscribed to Twitter Blue. I haven’t.
My Twitter account says I’ve given a phone number. I haven’t.— Stephen King (@StephenKing) April 20, 2023
Stephen King was adamant that he hadn’t committed the cardinal sin of forking over $8 to billionaire, Elon Musk.
You’re welcome namaste 🙏

The accusations that King was paying the $8 subscription fee were mounting rapidly when Musk jetted into his replies to clear things up.
‘Namaste’. LOL.
@elonmusk
Consider having a fund where individuals could pay for a needy celebrity’s blue check bill for a single month? 😂— JR (@GoodYarngrl) April 20, 2023
We like it, but the tag has to read ‘This celebrity is verified through the Celebrity Blue Check Welfare program’.
"Blue paid by Elon" tag would be the biggest flex.
— Clayo (@ClayOglesby) April 20, 2023
LOLOLOL! Even better.
I anonymously sponsored your blue check through their adopt-a-celebrity sponsorship program. Wasn’t going to say anything about it, but you’re welcome.

‘For the price of just a cup of coffee every month in Joe Biden’s America, you can help an impoverished celebrity like, Stephen King here, to maintain his life-giving Twitter blue check.’

Elon hasn't done a whole lot right since taking over this site but making celebs who said they'd never pay for twitter (Stephen King, LeBron James, William Shatner) keep their blue checks is kind of funny https://t.co/2sEzGezg1C

We like the sentiment, but the claim that Elon hasn’t done much right since becoming Chief Twit depends on your definition of ‘right’. The entertainment value is off the charts.
Also, ‘kind of funny’? It’s friggin’ hilarious!
Elon Musk reveals he is ‘personally paying’ the Twitter Blue subscriptions of some celebrities to keep their checkmark, such as Lebron James and Stephen King. pic.twitter.com/ulLvwOyLIn
— Pop Base (@PopBase) April 20, 2023
Why would he do this?! Aren’t they millionaires?
Just Shatner, LeBron and King
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 21, 2023
According to Musk, it’s only three accounts, all of whom complained very publicly about losing their blue checks.
Serious question, why?

People on the Right were perplexed.
elon's auto-subscribing celebs like stephen king, lebron james and taylor swift to twitter blue to make it seem like they're down with his dumb charade https://t.co/942CXHrspG
— Marlow Stern (@MarlowNYC) April 20, 2023
People on the Left immediately saw some nefarious business-based scheme whereby Musk would trick the rubes into signing up for Twitter Blue.
Allow us to clear this one up for you:
IT’S FUNNY.
That’s why he did it. To amuse himself … and those who enjoy his sense of humor (raising our hands slowly).
He walked in the first day carrying a sink to make a pun.
If you send an email to Twitter’s press office you get an auto-reply with the poop emoji.
He changed the Twitter logo to the DOGE dog for days.
If you’re perplexed by Musk’s motivations at this point, you’re just not paying attention.
I hope this is #Twitter and @elonmusk trolling him, this is masterful!!! 🤣 https://t.co/waejXWViRA pic.twitter.com/rOQdXf6e0e

This guy gets it.
Most are screaming that Musk wouldn't give them their blue check marks for free. Some are complaining that he did. https://t.co/KdQyyTsNrz
— Aldous Huxley's Ghost™ (@AF632) April 21, 2023
Exactly, that’s a core part of the troll. Let’s make some predictions:
Shatner will be grateful.
Stephen King will want the blue check removed because it’s the new mark of the beast to his left wing buddies.
LeBron could go the Stephen King route, but is the most likely of the three to completely ignore the whole thing. Or … he might ask if China can fund his blue check instead of Elon Musk. LOL.
It would be very funny if Musk unverified all legacy accounts except like one journalist he really hates. Like someone who covers misinformation like Ben Collins or Taylor Lorenz and then they were like “I’m not paying for Twitter blue! Please believe me!!”
— Ben Dreyfuss (@bendreyfuss) April 20, 2023
Speaking of predictions, Ben Dreyfuss came close.
Oh lmao I guess he is sort of doing this https://t.co/ktcH60ryph
— Ben Dreyfuss (@bendreyfuss) April 20, 2023
LOL. Right?! Stephen King got immediate negative feedback for apparently paying Elon Musk and responded predictably.
Elon Musk is a desperate guy. After being publicly denounced and turned down by both LeBron James and Stephen King, Musk discreetly paid for both of their verification badges. Not only is Musk a failed rocket man, but he's also a clout-chaser. pic.twitter.com/7x1vMwQBk9

We’re gonna leave you with this one because we laughed out loud. Dude literally said ‘you’re pathetic’ after filming THAT. LOL!
