The Democrats with help from the media are again attempting to alarm Americans by claiming that President Trump and DOGE are trying to get rid of Social Security.
There are of course other reasons the Dems are freaking out, and it's discoveries like this:

The cause of all the Left's concern is that their shams are being discovered and rooted out. They know full well that Trump and DOGE aren't going to take away grandma's Social Security check.
Naturally the legacy media is going to help the Dems push their preferred narratives. Real Clear Politics' Tom Bevan shared this headline from NBC News, and the small print caught my eye:

The sub-head includes "Trump has targeted these independent actors and tried to bend them to his worldview, willingly or not."
If they're dependent on a certain level of government funding they don't sound very "independent."
“Trump’s threatening their independence by taking away their dependence” is quite a take, NBC News!
Here's a sample of the kind of "independence" Trump is threatening to take away:
Pushing into social and cultural realms that past presidents largely avoided, he used federal funds as leverage in pressuring Columbia University to make changes that could reshape what students learn about the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. (Columbia’s interim president, Katrina Armstrong, resigned last week.)

On Thursday night, Trump signed another executive order punishing a different law firm that has crossed him. He yanked government contracts with WilmerHale and imposed other sanctions, citing in part its hiring of Robert Mueller and two other attorneys who took part in a Justice Department investigation into allegations that Russia meddled in the 2016 election on Trump’s behalf. Mueller retired from the firm four years ago.
The story also mentions how the big meanie Trump is revoking visas of anti-Semitic student agitators and removing their "independence" to intimidate Jews on campuses.
Trump is also referred to as having "authoritarian" dictatorial tendencies. Sure, NBC, every dictator has an agency dedicated to shrinking the size and scope of the government. Do these people ever listen to themselves?

Trump's also securing the border and enforcing immigration laws. The only "independence" he's threatening on that front is the independence of people in the country illegally to keep committing crimes.
