The anti-communism/socialism protests in Cuba have caused some in the American media to try and temper what’s really going on. For example, the New York Times said protesters were chanting “freedom,” which, according to the paper, is an “anti-government slogan.” Additionally, Twitter’s news made it sound like the hashtag #SOSCuba was all about Covid-19 concerns while CBS This Morning basically blamed Trump:
THERE it is! CBS This Morning report assigns blame for Cuba’s crumbling economy (guess who!) https://t.co/Wgpr1Q2HVI

Not to be outdone, this is the Washington Post’s contribution to the media spin:
Thousands of people filled the streets in Cuba on Sunday to protest increasing poverty in the country, as well as limited access to doses of coronavirus vaccines. https://t.co/rSv6sPpl1T

That’s not what they’re protesting, WaPo, but nice try:
Increasing poverty? But @SenSanders and @AOC said these policies were gonna be Aces for the United States.
And no, they are protesting communism and socialism. https://t.co/7b6ynJm31j

Much of the U.S. media is bending over backward to avoid phrasing it that way.

Libertad = Freedom
Libertad ≠ VaccinesThe Cuban people want freedom from an oppressive, totalitarian regime, not because vaccines are in short supply. https://t.co/oDzMHLbYOo

They were/are protesting their tyrannical communist government and longing for the freedoms we possess here that certain “experts” are attempting to curtail. So yeah I guess not what WaPo said at all. https://t.co/tZtV0U9vIy
