After the horrific shooting at the office of the Capital Gazette in Maryland yesterday, there were some attempts made to score political points off the terrible situation. But there’s also talk about the safety of journalists, and here are a couple tweets wondering where Trump or the NRA stand on this particular issue:
We should see if trump and the @NRA think we should start arming journalists
— Ben Wexler (@mrbenwexler) June 28, 2018
oddly havent seen calls to arm journalists (would be as dumb as the calls to arm teachers, etc. but yeah…)

Who wants to tell them?
Hey doofus. You already have that right. It's called the 2nd Amendment. Read the Constitution.
That right isn't given to you by Trump or the NRA. SMH. https://t.co/BUK0QJg8kC— kerry ⭐⭐⭐ (@K1erry) June 29, 2018
I think you'll find that the NRA thinks journalists should have the right to carry a weapon if they want to, actually. https://t.co/jWYmvlzEEu

Right, so we’re not quite sure what their point is.
I’m an armed journalist and I consistently encourage others to follow my lead. https://t.co/KlxeHIzHia

If I remember correctly, @StephenGutowski — a @freebeacon reporter — has trained journalists on gun safety. He's been teaching for a while. Stephen is a VERY good authority on firearms. https://t.co/VxZQceYTYG

Journalist here. First and Second Amendment advocate. What about journalists who want to arm themselves? https://t.co/wt0FEbGHFy

If it were easier to carry in DC I guarantee many in our newsroom would be packing https://t.co/QgI7VdMYxr

Any one who wants to legally arm themselves should be able to… let me repeat… ANYONE.
Calls for teachers to be able to arm themselves are to protect themselves and students. So yeah, I support that too. https://t.co/Abf5UIwKRA

Journalists aren’t prohibited from carrying a firearm unless their PRIVATE employer demands it…..teachers work for the GOVERNMENT and they’re prohibited https://t.co/dgSSVJD9B0
— Brickhouse (@Brick______) June 29, 2018
Not in Maryland. Very hard to protect yourself in Maryland, but bad guys don't seem to have that problem. https://t.co/65VMttnQA5
— Liz S. (@StarChamberMaid) June 28, 2018
So that pretty much backfired.
Journalists like everyone else should be allowed to carry a firearm if they so choose. https://t.co/pf1QV7qHA1
— Michael O'Donovan (@BeardedMinarchy) June 29, 2018
Yep, if they choose, which makes the language that’s sometimes used to frame it in the context that somebody else would be doing the arming is totally perplexing:
Who's "we," and how are "we" arming people?
— Currently between fraudulent suspensions (@jtLOL) June 29, 2018
What does this mean, "WE should start arming [them]"? What specific volitional action must "we" be taking? Why not let journalists make their own choices? #ShallNotBeInfringed
— Joe the Dissident (@joethepatriotic) June 29, 2018
Journalists are big boys and girls. They should arm themselves without waiting for "we" to do it.
— baldilocks (@JulietteAkinyi) June 29, 2018
It should be an individual choice, but for some reason liberals often feel the need to make it some sort of collective decision.
