REALLY? WaPo's 'free speech' headline hot take sends heads to desks (Hint: Founders unavailable for comment)

Possibly the most ridiculous lede I have seen lately. https://t.co/FLAswK7j6I

Howard Dean’s take on the First Amendment sparked plenty of facepalms yesterday, and this Washington Post headline is picking up where Dean left off:

Berkeley gave birth to the Free Speech Movement in the 1960s. Now, conservatives are demanding it include them. https://t.co/tw0fha1I3V

Yikes! Well, first off…

Not to nitpick but the Founding Fathers (who would be considered US conservatives today) gave birth to the real Free Speech Movement. https://t.co/jYKeXNG3AS

Actually, the Founding Fathers gave birth to the free speech movement in 1787. https://t.co/nvBOrOjU1u

Some progressives might be shocked to learn that “free speech” wasn’t invented by Berkeley lefties to only include the like minded:

The point of true free speech is that you don't have to "demand" it from people who might say no because they disagree with you. https://t.co/i1qewUmx1R

— John Hayward (@Doc_0) April 21, 2017

Not so much "demanding it include them" as "asking that Berkeley kindly not kill them in a riot for daring to speak on campus" https://t.co/ivegGCJMLr

Hey WaPo, do you ever read your headlines out loud to hear how they sound before publishing them? https://t.co/57actbXEVR

— Hurricane Watcher? (@GodlessNZ) April 21, 2017

So they had never intended that free speech include conservatives? #fascists https://t.co/Yy7JfcUizy

Seriously, WTF, WaPo? https://t.co/xoe2DUbay1

Not much of a free speech movement if it doesn’t.

Stupid conservatives. Next they'll think they have a right to own a gunhttps://t.co/zHwIgrHAMD
