'Otherwise you become the DMV': Rep. McDermott urges new IRS commissioner to keep targeting with BOLO lists [video]

Washington Rep. Jim McDermott has previously said that conservatives who faced unfair IRS scrutiny were asking for it. Today, during questioning of the new head of the IRS, McDermott urged the commissioner to keep the same “be on the lookout” (BOLO) lists that were used to put added scrutiny on Tea Party applicants.

Here’s video of Rep. McDermott’s BOLO sermon to IRS commissioner Danny Werfel:

Transcript:

McDermott: I don’t think BOLO lists should be thrown out. Every time I get on a United Airlines flight to go home to Seattle, before he leaves the ground, the first officer leaves the cockpit and goes down with a BOLO list. He is on the lookout for a lot of things on that plane. You use it to organize your thinking. The college of surgeons has just adopted BOLO lists before they take somebody into surgery, there’s a whole long checklist of things that they look at in anticipation before they put you under anesthesia and do surgery. We think that’s the way you organize your thinking, and it’s clear to me that a “be on the lookout” list is a good idea. So don’t say you’re going to throw them away because, we know that … otherwise you become the DMV in Seattle, where you go and you get your drivers license. You take a number and you wait, and you have a long line of people, because they’re not organized. They’re taking them one at a time. And you should take 292 or 298 one at a time, and don’t organize your thinking. It doesn’t make any sense. So I want you to be careful about how you organize.

For McDermott, BOLO lists are a good way for the IRS to do business, but there are some forms of BOLOs that he opposes, as evidenced by these flashback tweets from earlier this month:
