Trying to piece together an 'open letter' advocating a certain viewpoint or government action can be tricky. Vetting that everyone who's signing off on your letter is who they say they are is an arduous task with little reward when the aim is to have the maximum number of names possible to prove how many people you have onboard. It can be so arduous in fact that sometimes people just don't bother at all, to hilarious results.
Open letter signed by over 1700 sociologists:

the text reads:
As educators, it is our duty to stand by the principles of critical inquiry and learning, to hold the university as a space for conversation that foregrounds historical truths, and that contextualizes this past week’s violence in the context of 75 years of settler colonial occupation and European empire. We are also deeply troubled by the lack of concern and care for Palestinian and Muslim students at many of our universities, as well as efforts to clamp down on student organizing and free speech.
Attached is a Google document containing a lengthier write-up of the concerns held by the signers as well as the list of those signing. Many notable names appear as signatories on the document, but once you start looking a little closer... something doesn't seem quite right.

Is ... is that Adolph Hitler?
Also note Heydrich, Goebbels, Eichmann, Heidegger. https://t.co/rQnv2ME6PR

Well if Adolf signed on of course Goebbels and Eichmann would be in a rush to get their names in there as well! And here we thought Martin Heidegger had died in 1976.

These names are all gold.
Luckily, we have someone to handle this pain in the ass.

Dr. Marcus Absent, PhD. professor emeritus in absentia

It's amazing Dr. Absent was able to find the time to add his name, really.
There are some “interesting” signatures on that list…

To say the least. Also featured as signatories are such luminaries in their field as 'Dr. Hamas McHamasFace University of Austin', 'George Santos, Director of Jew-ish studies, NYU' and 'Idi Amin, Professor of Ethnic Studies, Koboko University'
Don’t put open letters in editable google docs. The various names added make this downright hilarious

Yes, yes, they do.
As of this moment, the list appears to have (finally) been shut down from public editing, so perhaps they'll start cleaning this mess up. But as everyone should be aware by now the internet is forever, and screenshots will always be there to remind you of your infamy. How academia keeps falling on its face both ethically and technically is always a marvel to behold, if also a terrifying reminder that these are the people who are so often held up as our 'intellectual betters.' But if there's one thing you can rely on the denizens of The Internet for it's to poke fun at you if you leave the door open for it, and we were not let down here.
