Jets sign competition for Mark Sanchez

The New York Jets knew they couldn’t get Peyton Manning so they decided to give Mark Sanchez a contract extension instead. Today the team signed Drew Stanton in hopes of providing themselves with insurance in-case Sanchez goes down.

We also wouldn’t be surprised if the team doesn’t hope Stanton can compete for the starting job if things don’t go their way during the first few weeks of the season.

One week after the Jets renewed their commitment to Mark Sanchez by signing him to a three-year contract extension, Gang Green has found his backup for 2012.

The Daily News first reported on Twitter that the Jets have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.25 million deal with former Lions quarterback Drew Stanton.

The Jets targeted Stanton, the Lions’ second-round pick in 2007, shortly after the start of the free agency on Tuesday. Stanton flew to New Jersey on Thursday before coming to an agreement on Friday.

Stanton, 27, had four career starts in four seasons in Detroit. He won two of his three starts in 2010 after getting thrust into the starting role after injuries to Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill.
