Rural Areas Tasked With Finding Strategies to Make British Countryside 'Less White'

I write a lot about the United Kingdom in these VIP posts. So I was surprised to see a chyron from GB News reading, "Drive to make countryside 'less white.'"

I've written a lot about efforts to get more people of color to visit America's national parks and camp. The excuses I've heard for the majority of national park visitors being white is that camping is expensive to get into, and President Barack Obama said that park ranger uniforms look too much like law enforcement uniforms, scaring away black visitors. No, really.

So I was interested in this clip in which a woman tries to explain that dogs, for example, might make the countryside less inclusive for Muslim asylum-seekers, who don't keep dogs as pets. The woman in the clip is Delia Smith, a British chef and TV personality.

The fine print in the chyron mentions Defra, which is short for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (that sounds like something DOGE could have cut). I was a little skeptical about this making the countryside "less white," so I did a Google search for Defra and what it's up to. The Telegraph on Sunday published a piece about rural areas in Britain, like the Cotswolds, coming up with strategies to attract a more diverse crowd of people to reflect the nation's diversity.

Craig Simpson reports for The Telegraph:

The British countryside will be made into a less “white environment” under nationwide diversity plans.

The plans follow Defra-commissioned reports that claimed the countryside would become “irrelevant” in a multicultural society, as it was a “white environment” principally enjoyed by the “white middle class”.

Research has also been commissioned to support this work, some of which suggests that dogs should be kept under tighter control, as some groups are scared of them.

A second report commissioned by Defra for £108,000 also noted that small, rural villages are closely associated with their pubs, which "have limited food options and cater to people who have a drinking culture."

I'm just going to throw this out there: if you're a Muslim seeking asylum, why do you choose to go to a Christian-majority nation where people keep dogs as pets and enjoy a pint down the pub at the weekend? You came here, and now you complain that it's not welcoming enough.

One of my favorite follows on X that isn't political is @Bertie_Lakeland, which features a Lakeland Terrier named Bertie who bimbles about town and the countryside, often in those rural areas with a view of the sea. Here's Bertie doing his thing in the English countryside, exercising his dad's white privilege:

Adorable, right? So let's ban him.

Not pander … accommodate. Welcome.

Who at Defra decided that there needed to be more Muslim asylum-seekers enjoying the English countryside, enough to do a couple of studies of how to solve the "problem"?

I can't find it in the archives now, but I remember not so long ago writing up a piece on a story from one of the broadcast networks about blacks getting into typically white activities, like playing golf and scuba diving. Wow!

Remember, you're far-right and racist in the U.K. if you believe there's such a thing as native British culture and want to preserve it.
