Justine Bateman Critiques Video of Woman Claiming American Eagle Ad Revived Past Trauma

AP Photo/Chris Pizzello

We've posted a handful, but there's no way we could possibly do posts on all of the outrageous TikTok videos posted by women who were triggered by that Nazi ad campaign where American Eagle Outfitters implies that the use of actor Sydney Sweeney suggested the company supported eugenics.

I've got one here from a medical professional who even has a problem with the science behind the line, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans."

I don't think the ad copywriters were concerned with being scientifically accurate. I think they came up with a clever tagline that boosted American Eagle's stock stratospherically in after-hours trading.

That trauma surgeon is speaking from a place of privilege, being blonde and blue-eyed herself. But just look at the repressed trauma the ad caused this young brown girl.

"… relentless." Yes, they are.

It's been a while since we've seen actor and director Justine Bateman do one of her social media video critiques, so I was thrilled to see her take on this one:

The full post reads:

#SocialMediaVideoCritique

- The lighting is nice and the camera angle is appropriately high.

- The main issues with this piece are various production choices.

- The wardrobe choice for the actress is confusing.

- On the one hand, she appears to be wearing a white, strapless silk sheath. Her hair in a bun, with dangling earrings below.

- On the other hand, this comes off as a post-shower, white towel wrap. The hair is slightly messy, supporting the post-shower impression.

- This ambiguity distracts the viewer from the piece’s message.

- The lipstick prop in the beginning has no follow-through. It disappears from her hand at the first cut, and no other makeup is introduced. This causes the lipstick-application gesture to appear to be forced.

- The inclusion of the @sydney_sweeney image on the left side of the screen sells a self-own of the main character. Ms. Sweeney’s facial expression is one of satisfaction and pleasure. This gives a continuous impression that neither the actress, nor the points she’s making in the dialogue, are not being taken seriously by Ms. Sweeney, nor by the audience.

Fin.

Yeah, I was wondering, is she wearing a towel?

Yeah, someone tell Gavin Newsom.

Someone suggested the woman is just fishing for compliments and people telling her she's pretty, which is probably accurate.
