NYT: The War in Gaza Is Dividing the LGBTQ Community

If anything, I'd thought the war against Hamas had united the LGBTQ community with the pro-Palestine community. Look at all the "Queers for Palestine" banners. Or how about that banner that said, "There is no trans liberation without Palestinian liberation."

According to the New York Times, though, the war in Gaza is dividing the LGBTQ community. We haven't seen any evidence of that, but apparently there was "a fight over flags on Fire Island." Did someone oppose raising the Palestinian flag on the same flagpole as the venerated pride flag?

Liam Stack reports:

In the upscale gay resort town of Fire Island Pines, colorful flags honor LGBTQ+ history makers like actress Wanda Sykes and drag queen RuPaul in a small park near the harbor. For a few hours this month, one flag also honored Rep. Ritchie Torres, the first openly gay Afro Latino member of Congress.

But Torres is also an outspoken supporter of Israel, and not long after his flag went up, it was torn down by the gay activist group ACT-UP, which was also honored at the park, and replaced with two flags, one of which honored queer Palestinians.

Within hours, the flag for queer Palestinians was also torn down by Michael Lucas, a pornographic performer and filmmaker with a history of anti-Muslim statements.

Rep. Ritchie Torres, the first openly gay Afro Latino member of Congress, says the Times never contacted him.

Is the LGBTQ community truly divided? Or are we mistaking a visible vocal minority for a majority?

Although he interviews Jason Rosenberg, who has been caught celebrating October 7th, the author couldn’t be bothered to interview the sitting Congressman who is the very subject of the article.  Bias.

Here's what Rosenberg retweeted on October 7: "rooting for everyone resisting oppression."

Never mind that Hamas makes homosexuality punishable by death.

Useful idiocy is becoming America’s greatest export.

Torres is a rising star … keep an eye on him.

The small but vocal minority gets the interviews, obviously.
