Dr. Jenn M. Jackson is a Ph.D. who doesn’t list her pronouns but does include a land acknowledgment in her Twitter bio; she’s tweeting to you from “occupied Onondaga lands.” She has also limited replies to her tweet about the death of Queen Elizabeth II, even though she’s racked up nearly 9,000. What Jackson wants to know is, if Brits get two weeks off to mourn the loss of the queen, when have blacks ever gotten a chance to mourn?
And no, she’s not making it up.
I literally was on the phone with British folks while tweeting this who confirmed that they won't be working for two weeks…y'all weird.

Which of your British friends have told you we get 2 weeks off? Because I’d reconsider your friendship, as they’ve set you up to look very silly. Also your tweet implies British and Black are 2 separate things. British people are not exclusively white. Black & British exists
— Sarah McKibbin (@trit0ps) September 9, 2022
What ARE you talking about? Do you think black British people don't exist? It's not true that we get 2 weeks off, but even if it was true, it would apply to ALL British people, regardless of skin colour, and wouldn't apply to people who don't live here, whatever their ethnicity.
— Bessie Braddock (@BraddockBessie) September 9, 2022
We’re not getting two weeks off to mourn. If we do get any time off black British people would not be expected to work while the rest of us weren’t.
— Slarty Bartfast (@DatCatDer) September 9, 2022
This is a odd tweet.. firstly we don’t get two weeks off…
— Sox the waving cat (@Soxthewavingcat) September 9, 2022
Brit isn’t a skin colour, it’s a nationality made up of people of all races. As a Brit, I don’t know of anyone who is getting two weeks off because the Queen has died.

We get two weeks off? How? Where? What?
— Dr Bethany Usher (@bethanyusher) September 9, 2022
Can you advise how I apply for this 2 weeks off? My employers haven’t announced anything.
Are they giving PhD’s away if you collect enough vouchers from Corn Flake packets?
— Double Decker (@decker_bus) September 9, 2022
Who told you that? Lol no we don’t. We still go to work.
— Steph (@StephanieYeboah) September 9, 2022
I'm British and I don't know a single person who will be off work for a day, let alone two weeks, to mourn. There has been no suggestion anywhere that this is happening.
— Anton Chiron (@AntrimChicane) September 8, 2022
Black British people get the same time off as any other British people. That's how Britain works. We're all British regardless of race or skin colour.
Maybe America is different, I don't know, but you can be British and not be white.
Hope that helps.
— Bill Moon (@BigBillMoon) September 9, 2022
Firstly, we don't get two weeks off
Secondly, Britain is a diverse country. A quick Google would have told you that.

You really tweeted this.
— Tony Kinnett (@TheTonus) September 9, 2022
A period of mourning is not a period off work! It's the same all over the world.

Maybe you could tell my employer that as it's work as usual for most of us over here.

"Two weeks off" – Is making stuff up as you go along the way you make a living?
— Joe Jonkler (@figurewizard) September 9, 2022
I must have missed that memo. Every single person I know is in work as usual.
— Alan (@latenightblues) September 9, 2022
A) We’re not and B) there are plenty of Brits who are also black. Were it true the whole nation has gone off to sit at home and mourn for days on end (I refer you back to A here) that would also include the Brits who are also black.

Now you’re just lying.
— Sir Cold957 (@cold957) September 9, 2022
What exactly are you a ‘doctor’ of?
— JayWilspn (@jay_wilson202) September 9, 2022
Protests for BLM and George Floyd (not to mention all the pageantry involving his funeral) were allowed during COVID, but heaven forbid anyone have a wedding, funeral, see dying family members, or protests for said lockdown.

Dude had like 5 funerals pic.twitter.com/BPfW8ZS45E
— Joel Loren ⚡️ (@JoelLoren1) September 9, 2022
I'm so sorry this is happening to you
— jimtreacher.substack.com (@jtLOL) September 9, 2022
We’ve learned what today: That not all Brits are white, and that they’re not getting two weeks off to mourn. We’ve also learned a Ph.D. means nothing so don’t ask us to pay for your student loans.
