As Twitchy reported over the weekend, FINA, the international swimming federation and ruling body for Olympic water sports, announced that “it is barring transgender women from competing in women’s competitions if they have gone through male puberty.” That’s bad news for Lia Thomas, who transitioned as a college student (and suddenly started winning competitions).
U.S. Women’s Soccer’s Megan Rapinoe talked to TIME about transgender bans in sports. She wants evidence that biological males have an unfair advantage in girls’ sports and doesn’t believe there is any. She also noted that this is about people’s lives; “We’re talking about people’s lives,” she said. “I’m sorry, your kid’s high school volleyball team just isn’t that important. It’s not more important than any one kid’s life.”
What if that high school volleyball team helps a girl get into college? What about scholarships?
Megan Rapinoe defended biological males competing in female sports in an interview Sunday.
“Your kids’ high school volleyball team just isn’t that important,” the soccer star told Time Magazine.

Lot of men on her high school soccer team were there?

Women have long been told their dumb little sports don’t matter. Now they get to be told by their heroes in women’s sports! Exciting times! https://t.co/drUXf2nLz8

I mean we have to field a trans women soccer team for the World Cup at this point right?

A lot of times you hear about professional athletes encouraging young athletes; "Your team isn't that important" is a new one I guess.

I think high school volleyball is probably very important to daughters that would like to play.

Certainly agree. And they deserve a level playing field.
This is so obvious it hurts. Why would Rapinoe want to tamper with this?

The net is almost 8 inches lower in women's volleyball than men's. It's a huge difference.

Didn’t we just talk about how essential these team skills are to a young girl’s self confidence? Taking away a female’s opportunity for fair competition is not the answer to the growing mental health challenges in our country.

People need to stop treating her like she’s an authority on everything… she should focus on her soccer team since last we saw her out there, it didn’t seem that important to her either

Rapinoe: "It’s not more important than any one kid’s life.”
Also Rapinoe: Of one girl loses out on a scholarship or medal win, I don't care because trans rights and stuff …

Crazy to think that if 15-year old boys were allowed on the USWNT, she’d have never played.
— Never Wrong (@K0FaSho) June 21, 2022
If trans women were allowed to play on the USWNT, Megan Rapinoe wouldn’t make the roster.

Is there a less likable or less grateful sports star?

I didn’t think it was possible for her to be any more off-putting than I already thought she was. What a condescending shrew.
— Darby McGraw (@McgrawDarcy) June 21, 2022
Why isn’t U.S. Women’s Soccer doing more to attract trans athletes?
