MSNBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin tweets Tuesday that a restaurant refused to let his family dine inside because one of them wasn’t vaccinated — the four-year-old. Some people are making the point that it’s a private establishment and it can set policies to “protect” its workers and customers. But that’s a stupid point.
THREAD: today my family was denied eating indoors at a restaurant because, wait for it, my 4 yr old daughter was with me and they dont serve “unvaccinated” people. I tried to explain theres no CDC guideline requiring children under 5 get vaccinated. But the restaurant didn’t care pic.twitter.com/qFt48KZLWq

Don’t get me wrong, restaurants have the right to apply their own health standards but at least ground them in public health policies and science. Restaurants have suffered so much in this pandemic so its sad that when you try and help by dining out that you get turned away.
— Ayman (@AymanM) January 4, 2022
And just to be clear, everyone else with me was vaccinated, boosted and/or had covid (me). My 4 yr old daughter has a letter from her doctor stating she recently had covid. But they didn’t care and only offered us to sit outside even though they were seating customers indoors.
— Ayman (@AymanM) January 4, 2022
They did offer to let them sit outside in New York City in January.
Is the vaccine even allowed for children under 5 yet?
— Ryan Glasspiegel (@sportsrapport) January 4, 2022
It’s not. that’s exactly the point I was trying to make. What science, data, or public healthy policy or guideline is this grounded in? I couldn’t even get my 4 year old vaccinated if I wanted. Everyone else with me was vaxxed and boosted.

I'm with team @ilovebuvette on this one. They did offer you the option of outdoor seating. In fact, with a 4 yr old who has already had Covid-19, I would have jumped at that option seeing how she could get it again. I'm glad @ilovebuvette is looking out for everyone's health.

You do know that I could have also spread COVID to their staff just as easily as my 4 year old and yet by their policy I was allowed to sit inside but she was not? Genuinely, how does that make sense to you?
— Ayman (@AymanM) January 5, 2022
Requiring? There is no vaccine AUTHORIZED for those under 5. You couldn’t vaccinate if you wanted to.

No restaurants for you, then.

Sorry to hear this. Use the bullhorn you have available to you to turn the culture away from total fear and paranoia. CDC guidelines are just suggestions. What people hear on TV and get second hand from friends and family, culminates in these kinds of reactionary policies.

Almost like it’s a religion and not science, wonder how that happened

NYC and blue areas have canceled children. It’s so wrong. I can’t wait for the blow back for this. Can’t come soon enough.

Ratio time!
So cook dinner at home. Not rocket science.
Eating at a restaurant is a privilege not a right.

Drinking from the same drinking fountain was a privilege and not a right for a time.

Discrimination is always wrong. We would all be justifiably outraged if someone used that argument to deny a black man service, why are we defending the same discrimination for people who are not eligible to receive the vaccine?

Being a willfully obtuse jerk on Twitter is also a privilege and one that you've embraced whole heartedly, Molly.

This sets a very dangerous precedent for any private company who may wish to make decisions based on someone’s skin colour, religious affiliations, gender, sexual orientation, etc. This is absolute nonsense, and there is no excuse. Unvaccinated people aren’t even more of a risk.
— Maggie J (@maggiemurphyj) January 4, 2022
If you support people being able to invoke these “rights” and choose who gets what privileges based on what they arbitrarily decide, you better hope you aren’t on the receiving end one day.

Wow. That sort of toxic social logic can be used to justify literally anything.

Way to dodge the issue. Yes, of course he can make dinner at home. The point is how arbitrary and irrational Covid paranoia has made people.

The restaurant does realize that all of the triple-vaccinated people there can still spread the coronavirus, right?
