Erik Bottcher says he’s been elected to New York City Council, so we’re guessing he’ll get that coveted blue-check soon. Until then, he’s tweeting out things worthy of blue-checks, like this reminder that there was a time conservatives had no problem wearing masks. This editor was certainly around during the ’80s and doesn’t remember anyone ever wearing a mask, but here’s an old sepia-toned scan of an American family in masks in fear of catching AIDS. Bottcher says to never forget.https://twitter.com/lvandriest/status/1467140364179890176

Cover of Moral Majority Magazine, 1983.
Not a pertinent argument. Not a mandate, practiced by few.
Argue better.
— Laurel Van Driest (@lvandriest) December 4, 2021
I wonder who gave them that idea?
— Ryan James Girdusky (@RyanGirdusky) December 4, 2021
Why, it’s Dr. Anthony Fauci!
May try to remember who pushed that fear, turns out a weird “conservative”https://t.co/YjC4L20o5V

This might be a good point if they actually started wearing masks and forcing others to do so during that era.
— Scott G (@scttfrnks) December 4, 2021
Never saw ANYONE wearing a mask during the early days of AIDS… and I traveled all over the world…
— Che Huahua (@_BottomLineGuy_) December 4, 2021
As someone who lived through the 1980s, I can tell you that no one wore masks. But there was a deliberate effort to portray HIV as a virus that everyone was equally at risk of contracting.
— Fungusaur (@Fungusaur) December 4, 2021
Pretty sure this was right after Fauci claimed AIDS could possibly be spread by casual contact.
This is not the W you think it is, champ.

Didn’t Oprah Winfrey use her show at the time to announce that in just a few years, half the heterosexual population of the country would have AIDS?
I was alive in the 1980s. No one was wearing masks everywhere, you pig ignorant, repulsively disingenuous clown.
— Physics Geek (@physicsgeek) December 4, 2021
You are so wrong. I grew up in 80s. Masks were NEVER a thing.
— Nina Bookout (@NDBook96) December 4, 2021
Never saw a single person masked during the AIDS epidemic, and I had a close friend who had the infection. He was an integral part of music in my church where he freely interacted with everyone until he was hospitalized and passed away.
Did you just make this meme?
— Add your name (@corrcomm) December 4, 2021
I grew up in California during the 80's and literally no one wore a mask to prevent AIDS. This was most likely a prop used to make people scared which the media are very good at.
— Dana (@sparkey909w) December 4, 2021
Strange I don’t remember that at all and I have gay family members who were out during that time.
— catie lord (@tudsgrl) December 4, 2021
No one wore masks, you incompetent twatwaffle.
— Taxpayer1234 #DoNotComply (@Taxpayers1234) December 4, 2021
Never happened
— No Soup for Knowles (@nosoup4knowles) December 4, 2021
This is not the 'W' you think it is. In fact, it is quite the self-own. Because masks are paranoid hysteria in both cases. Wrong then, wrong now.
— Ryan Schuiling (@RyanSchuiling) December 4, 2021
Honestly have no recollection of anyone pushing this nonsense that we’re facing today.
— BadgerJer (@BadgerJer) December 4, 2021
This is a straight up lie. People were not wearing masks like this when all that was happening. Who is believing this??
— justaboutoverit (@EastCoastalDB) December 4, 2021
Strange, I never saw a single masked person in the 80's
— Lisa Cosmos (@lisacosmo) December 4, 2021
What orifice did you pull this one out of? I never saw a single person, conservative or otherwise, wearing a mask in the 80s to avoid getting AIDS.
— AdamInHTownTX (LGBFJB+ Supporter) (@AdamInHTownTX) December 4, 2021
This is false info. I lived through that time and had to give blood for myself due to the lack of knowledge. There was never ANYTHING on MSM about anything like this. You might have one small paper like this but it was NOT a general mindset like you are trying to push.
— Micky (@germaknee) December 4, 2021
I was alive at the time. Not remotely similar to what's going on right now. And we were not wearing masks, either.
— Liberty5-3000 (@Liberty5781) December 4, 2021
That literally never happened

Exactly no one wore masks during the AIDS crisis.

I was a young adult working as a patient care giver when AIDS broke out. I don’t recall masking ever being encouraged for the general population. Patients were treated with reverse isolation practice. We wore masks to protect the patient from us. Not for our protection.

So this was on the cover of the July 1983 issue of Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority Report, which of course means all conservatives started wearing masks. Find us a photo of Falwell wearing a mask.
