Stunning and brave: Reporter shares epic recounting of his return to a movie theater after a year of lockdown

The San Francisco Gate’s Dan Gentile says that it’s been pretty easy for him to maintain his hermit lifestyle during California’s lockdown, but for professional reasons — to review “Godzilla vs. Kong” — he left home and went to a movie theater for the first time in a year. Forget about the movie; this piece is all about what it’s like to enter a movie theater in 2021.

We’re guessing from the selfie accompanying the article he knows he sounds a little silly, but still:

Outside the AMC Metreon in SoMa, I lock up my bicycle and swap my lightweight “biking mask” (RIP Uniqlo) with a heavy-duty N95 “inside mask.” From behind me, I hear a man singing Prince’s “Raspberry Beret.” I turn and he says hello and flashes a smile, a welcome gesture, until I realize he isn’t wearing a mask.

I’ve embraced a hermit lifestyle the past year, but made a few work exceptions, and this is one of them.

“Did I have fun?” he asks. “Yes. Was I really nervous the whole time? Definitely. But most importantly, would I do it again? It’s complicated.”

To be fair, if you’re afraid of catching COVID-19, California is not a good place to be.
