You might not remember this from a couple of Christmases ago, but CNN announced in late November that it would be boycotting the White House’s Christmas party for the media “in light of the president’s continued attacks on freedom of the press and CNN.”
CNN’s brave gesture didn’t matter the following year anyway, because in 2018 President Trump canceled the media Christmas party altogether. White House correspondents like April Ryan said weren’t planning on attending anyway; “I don’t break bread with people who don’t like me,” she tweeted. It’s a sad day when the press and the president don’t like each other, unlike when journalists were clapping like trained seals when President Obama did a literal “mic drop” at their nerd prom.
New York Times White House correspondent Annie Karni has noted the absence of a media Christmas party this year as well:
The canceling of the WH media christmas party was a story last year, and now it's just gone and it's not even a thing, like the press briefing and the NYT/WaPo subscriptions.
— Annie Karni (@anniekarni) December 11, 2019
That’s right; we’d forgotten the White House had canceled its subscriptions to the New York Times and Washington Post. And now the media Christmas party isn’t even a thing.
Why would you clowns want to party with an Administration you despise and lie about 24/7?
— Mark Dice (@MarkDice) December 11, 2019
Good riddance. Media can spend their own money if they want a party.
— Rock (@MonkeyShovel) December 11, 2019
I’m so sorry this is happening to you…
— Cory (@TNConserv13) December 11, 2019
That there ever was a WH media christmas party highlights EVERYTHING that is wrong with the media in this country. Access journalism.
— Poppy (@MN_poppy) December 11, 2019
And the public cheers
— ??ConservativePPC?? (@CanadianElJefe) December 11, 2019
That is one thing that should not happen. Reporters on the WH beat should not socialize with their sources
— Joan Anzelmo (@JoanAnzelmo) December 11, 2019
The fact that members of media *want* to go to mingle with the WH at Christmas, or at a dinner should tell you everything you need to know about the problems with journalism and journalists.
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) December 11, 2019
They just want free booze, don’t overthink it
— tru (@TruTellr) December 11, 2019
There should never have been one in the first place.
— Jonathan Wagner (@mrjwags) December 11, 2019
You're perfect New York Times material, bless your heart.
— jœy (@FalconsFans_CHI) December 11, 2019
An information bubble forming around the center of power in the US and a bunch of hacks not getting free cookies, same thing.
— Craig Teper (@ctep) December 11, 2019
Gonna miss those free drinks and finger food?
— ? Boulevardier ⚜️ (@portdauphin) December 11, 2019
This is satire?
— Eric Levai (@ericlevai) December 11, 2019
The press has gotten exactly what they deserve.
— Tim Tunshell (@ttunshell) December 11, 2019
We're waiting for actual journalists to be hired by the media.
— C-Lee ?? (@CLee83449360) December 11, 2019
“We are real news, Mr. President.” Now I’m going to cry on Twitter because I didn’t get called on.
Perhaps if y'all had internally policed the conduct of your members like @Acosta , there'd still be one.
— ParatrooperJJ (@ParatrooperJJ) December 11, 2019
— Ernest Wiles (@E_Wiles1) December 11, 2019
I'm sorry this is happening to you.
— Dale Betterton (@DaleBetterton) December 11, 2019
Maybe if you treated the occupant of the White House just a little bit better they would invite you over
— rosalokeyorbe (@rosalokeyorbe) December 11, 2019
Why should they have it? Not needed!
— Mike Pache (@MikePacheFox10) December 11, 2019
It should never have been a “thing”.
— Wai Hap (@HapWai) December 11, 2019
Just like journalism, gone. No longer a thing.
— Anthony Cotita (@cotita_anthony) December 11, 2019
— Sal Corvett (@RussianBot215) December 11, 2019
Imagine not getting your little party.
— west belfast sovereign wealth fund (@hunterinthesno1) December 11, 2019
Maybe you should all learn to code over the holidays.
— Bobz Uruncle (@Theteeben) December 11, 2019
I hope you make it through this difficult time.
— Don (@_Hey_Its_Don_) December 11, 2019
Maybe President Sanders will throw a media bash at one of his homes and make the rich pay for it.
