The BBC reports that the U.S. Association for Library Service to Children voted unanimously over the weekend to remove author Laura Ingalls Wilder’s name from a children’s book award, renaming it the Children’s Literature Legacy award. The association could no longer overlook the very problematic “anti-Native and anti-Black sentiments in her work.”
Laura Ingalls Wilder (b. 1867), author of the “Little House on the Prairie” series, has been removed from a book award after activists complained her writings promoted racism and colonialism. https://t.co/d1YscY644q

President Trump actually made a very good point when talking about Confederate monuments coming down in the middle of the night. Where does it end? Is Thomas Jefferson canceled because he owned slaves? We still don’t know about Jefferson, but we’d never imagined that the author of the “Little House on the Prairie” series of books would be disappeared like this.
And so it goes. https://t.co/A3o4ycW0oa

She told stories of her past. "Colonialism" – her mother was afraid of Indians & thought they were heathens, her father did not, the family was forced to move from a home because of a treaty with the Indians, and an African American doctor helped the family when they had malaria

Dig up her skeleton and give it 20 lashings with the whip. That'll teach this dead lady not to promote colonialism via subtext. I promise you this, I bet she'll never do it again
Bad old dead lady, bad!?

Craziest thing I ever heard! She wrote books appropriate to the time she grew up in. She was not a racist. Travesty!

It was a different time … kind of like how 2001 was a different time and Justin Trudeau had no idea blackface wasn’t cool anymore.
Good to know coming generations will be well read…

You would think feminists would be all over this censorship.
Little House on the Prairie books highlight women’s perseverance, strength, and courage.

Well, they’re wrong to love her. And the books, which as far as we know will stay on most school bookshelves. For now.
According to the BBC, the association “had received complaints for years” over the books.
My daughter and I have just completed a 6 month unit study of all of her writings. We’re heading to Mansfield, MO this week to visit the museums there dedicated to her. Excellent writings and author. Highly recommended. We combat this ignorance by doing our own thing.
