We put the word “illegal” in the headline because there’d be no incentive for The New York Times to publish an op-ed encouraging legal immigration. So here’s an idea (from an associate professor at NYU’s journalism school, the same place that hired Talia Lavin and Lauren Duca to teach): look at immigration as reparations for everything bad that’s ever happened or will happen because of “the West.”
The op-ed was published a couple of weeks ago, but the tweet is still making the rounds and adding to that ratio.
My NYT op-ed argues for immigration as reparations, for people whose future has been stolen by colonialism, war, inequality, and climate change #immigrationasreparations https://t.co/z8LOXmk5hV

You forgot patriarchy too lol
— Steven (@brother_steve) June 8, 2019
And heteronormativity. Don’t forget that!
— Utopiekflucht (@Utopieflucht) June 8, 2019
This is just exactly like when you help a clueless, imbecile neighbor fix the car engine and then he blames you for the tail lights not working. So stupid is this tweet and the person who crafted it

Very simplistic and actually, quite ridiculous.

"As reparations you can work our fields for slave wages" is quite a take.
— John Grefe (@JohnGrefe) June 7, 2019
My op-ed argues for them to stay home and fix their own damn countries and for you to GFY.

immigration as revenge.

Diversity as punishment huh
— Jacob A. Thigpen (@jakethiggy) June 10, 2019
Diversity as punishment, silly that one of the greatest strengths has to be forced upon others.

So let's get this straight
The Brits owe reparations to America, Canada, Australia and India
Germany and Russia owe reparations to Poland
The Muslims owe reparations to Spain and Sicily
And absolutely nobody owes anything to Thailand
— Matthew R. Gaglio (@MatthewRGaglio) June 8, 2019
Then Portugal England France Belgium Holland and Spain are far more on the hook than the US we barely got into the colonial game – these countries were in unit the 14-1500s

What about the immigrants whose ancestors were conquistadors.

Latin American immigrants to the USA are descended from western colonists

I agree, Spain should be conquered by Guatemalans for colonizing some land 400 years ago. ?
— S1 Pog (@s1pog) June 8, 2019
Colonialism? Pshht!! If not for the U.S. and Britain, a major percentage of people jetting in to lecture us about it would have never even been born.
— Bruce Thompson51 (@BruceThompson51) June 8, 2019
So, the way to "repair" a culture is to give them free reign to be absorbed while they abandon the possibility of fixing their homeland by emigrating somewhere else?
Sounds logical. If your goal is to actually finish the job colonialism started, that is.
— Pablo Lamprea (@Stoppokingmeee) June 7, 2019
If colonialism had been maintained, many third-world hellholes would be competently governed today. The biggest mistake the European powers made was being guilted out of their colonies.
— Paul Patzer (@PPATZER) June 10, 2019
I did nothing wrong why should I pay for the past? why should anyone pay for a long dead past!?
Worse – what if this "strategy" results in greater harm, more suffering & conflict than all the alledged damage from colonialization? Will there be Reparations for reparations?— PC YOUNG (@Conservamator) June 10, 2019
Lolz! Scots were serfs and small holders thrown out of Scotland onto ships to the new world and became basically indentured white slaves. I'll have some of that preparation too. And those bloody Roman's caused havoc too. Everywhere. Reparations for everyone alive!

This is a totally flawed and evil theory that is presented in the paper below. If you follow this logic and go back in history, there is no country that has not at some point attacked or used some other country or suppressed some group.
— Nin_DFO (@nina_fogelstrom) June 8, 2019
More revisionist history from the bigoted resentment ideologues at the NYT. As if the West invented war, inequality, or empire. That's all any humans have done anywhere, ever. In fact, it's the West that invented the morality that it is actually wrong to do these things.
— Ryan Beguhn (@RyanBeguhn) June 11, 2019
Dear Mr Mehta, thank you for your honesty in clearly displaying that mass migration is, in fact, an invasion bent on conquest through demographic replacement. Your openness is refreshing as it is horrifying. All of the "bigots" and "hatemongers" were right.

When did the NYT start allowing trolls to write op-eds?
— Jeffrey Whelchel (@jeffreywhelchel) June 8, 2019
Kudos to @FormerNewspaper for finding an op-ed writer to check every identity politics box that exists.
Truly a comedy piece for the ages.
