Councilman links hamburgers to wildfires, says Los Angeles should mandate vegan options

Andrew Mollenbeck of KFI-AM in Orange County and Los Angeles is reporting that Councilman Paul Koretz would like Los Angeles to mandate at least one vegan protein option at “all movie theaters, large-scale entertainment venues, airport restaurants, zoo concession stands and some other locations in the city.”

He also drew a line connecting hamburgers with the recent wildfires that tore through California.

Mollenbeck reports:

Councilman Paul Koretz introduced a motion referencing a number of studies that point to the negative impacts the meat and dairy industry has on the environment, including a University of Oxford study that found if more people in the United States adopted plant-based eating it could cut greenhouse- gas emissions from food sources by 70 percent.

“I want to make it easier for us to do better around the city, as well as provide more options for people who are already following a plant-based diet,” Koretz said during a news conference at City Hall.

Of course, PETA had to be reached for comment, and PETA’s Ben Williamson said that “natural disasters such as the wildfires that this great city recently suffered are a terrible reminder that we must do more to protect our planet and its inhabitants. Animal agriculture is one of the most, if not the most, significant contributor to the world’s very serious environmental problems.”
