As you’ve probably heard by now, the fate of The Weekly Standard is up in the air. Is it closing down? Sure sounds like it:
BREAKING: Multiple sources tell me that neocon magazine @weeklystandard is expected to close its operations in a few weeks. It had lost many subscribers since the 2016 election as its #NeverTrumper editors @BillKristol @stephenfhayes @SykesCharlie publicly aligned with the Left.
— Emerald Robinson (@EmeraldRobinson) December 4, 2018
EXCLUSIVE: The Weekly Standard will be closing, according to several employees and individuals close to the magazine. One editor there tells me they do not even have a budget for 2019.

The NeverTrump conservative magazine The Weekly Standard will likely be shutting down https://t.co/XJipw9IJYe

CNN’s chief media correspondent Brian Stelter has a source telling him that the owners are expanding the “pro-Trump” Washington Examiner.
The view of a source familiar with the Weekly Standard situation: "They're expanding the pro-Trump mag [Wash Examiner] that does what the owners want, while threatening closing of an independent magazine that has its own history and identity." https://t.co/eBd8zpFJjS
— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) December 5, 2018
For a media correspondent, Stelter doesn’t seem very familiar with the staff at the Washington Examiner; either that, or he’s just assuming anything to the right of CNN is pro-Trump.
The most prominent Washington Examiner personalities (e.g., @SethAMandel, @philipaklein @ByronYork @TPCarney) are by no means reflexively partisan pro-Trumpers. Your source has a narrative but no credibility. https://t.co/du9MZ143em

Yeah, you never see Byron York without his MAGA cap. He and Seth Mandel are all-in for Trump.
A source familiar with the tweets of Seth Mandel is telling you he doesn't carry Trump's water. Can you say the same about CNN and any Democrat?
— Liz Mac (@TheLizMac) December 5, 2018
You have to be clueless to think this characterization of the Examiner is accurate.
— Phil (@earlp1231) December 5, 2018
Wait, you're a media reporter and you think @SethAMandel is pro-Trump? https://t.co/twpmw0xwB2
— Chuck Ross (@ChuckRossDC) December 5, 2018
you so clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
do you think they would hire seth mandel to run a pro trump magazine?— mark propp (@damosuzuki1) December 5, 2018
CNN thinks @SethAMandel was hired to run a "pro-Trump mag." https://t.co/E9cXxePlut

Is WashEx really "pro" Trump or just not off the rails rabid? https://t.co/GSGJf8ImwH
— Liz S. (@StarChamberMaid) December 5, 2018
It’s not “pro- Trump”. It’s what we call actual reporting. Something you and your colleagues are not familiar with.

Someone, who may be close to something or someone may think something. Great source. But I'd expect nothing less from a reliable source.
— George G (@obx_2012) December 5, 2018
I think TWS is a really good publication with some of the best people, but you have to know almost nothing about conservative media or the people involved to think that The Washington Examiner is or will be an exclusively pro-Trump publication.
Get better sources. https://t.co/4ei9n2q916

Does CNN even know what sources are?
— Michael Eiban (@mkeiban) December 5, 2018
Your sources suck
— shooters shoot (@phillyvol5) December 5, 2018
Good grief! How does someone like Stelter who is the media guy for CNN not pushback on that quote from his source?
— Kris Kinder (@kris_kinder) December 5, 2018
@brianstelter Brian….are you going to the same school as Ocasio Cortez? You are really out there with you leftist agenda.
— PA (@PaMars21) December 5, 2018
The Washington Examiner expansion is under Seth Mandel who is decidedly not a Trump cheerleader.
Man you suck at your job

What do you say, Seth?
Excited to announce we'll be taking the mag national, expanding its focus well beyond politics and seeking to conquer all 57 states! https://t.co/eaaNa1w2Mt
Ready or not, here we come America
— Seth Mandel (@SethAMandel) December 3, 2018
could you be enjoying the Trump Era any more?
— Seth Mandel (@SethAMandel) November 15, 2018
Trump rally turned into a Fox rally, apparently. Crossing some lines, no? pic.twitter.com/oCzceMPOpl
— Seth Mandel (@SethAMandel) November 6, 2018
The existence of conservative critics of Trump complicates a simplistic narrative that conservatism=Trumpism. It also makes it tougher to do what @JonahNRO calls "conservatives in the mist"–the anthropological way the right gets covered by observing a couple ppl then booking it.
