Oliver Darcy (who now works for CNN but used to criticize CNN when he was with TheBlaze) is sounding the alarm about President Trump referring to the press as the “enemy of the people,” and he’s not alone.
Sen. Orrin Hatch published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal calling for civility and discouraging Trump from using that phrase, like he did in this tweet:
Had a very good and interesting meeting at the White House with A.G. Sulzberger, Publisher of the New York Times. Spent much time talking about the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, “Enemy of the People.” Sad!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2018
However, take note of how Hatch worded his call for civility: “Insofar as reporters are committed to objective journalism and not political advocacy, they should be treated as noncombatants in the culture wars.”
Anyone else catch that bit about being “committed to objective journalism and not political advocacy”?
It’s alarming how much the President of the United States has desensitized people to hearing the press being called “enemy of the people.” https://t.co/qCDL49lS3e

Anyone else remember when CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour rallied the press to “now more than ever … commit to real reporting” in the weeks after Trump was elected? Maybe it was then they realized they couldn’t get by asking Trump what “enchanted” him most about being president.
We’ll allow that Darcy has a bit of a point here, but let’s be honest about who was the first to “desensitize” the media against attacks that it was politically biased and pushed “fake news.” Journalists are supposed to be inherently curious people — why don’t they seem at all curious about why Americans saw them as politically biased long before Trump even announced he was running?

You should be alarmed that we agree with him. And you should try to determine why. But you won't. Instead, you'll just hate us even more. Which is why we thought you were the enemy in the first place. #caring https://t.co/EK7p5wM7Sq

The press has done a fantastic job in validating his accusation. https://t.co/9DPiNhCzsh

It’s amazing how desensitized to reporting the news #FakeNews has become.

I thought he said that fake news was the enemy, not journalism?

Whats alarming is people like you in the press allowed yourself into this position. I don't want your opinion. I want facts. PERIOD.

Here’s an idea: clean your damn houses up, most of the media are a bunch of dishonest biased hacks. Don’t want to be called that, stop being that. Pretty damn simple. https://t.co/jYMG3b3vtC

Perhaps it’s actually the press itself that has desensitized Americans. https://t.co/v0CurLZ3Kp

I have an M.S. in Reading. I can tell the difference between fact & opinion. I can spot emotional rhetoric & fallacies. I understand the use of unnamed sources to weave a false narrative. I am perfectly able to see the media for what it is- #FakeNews

The press was the enemy of the people long before Trump. He just capitalized on it. https://t.co/p7YwbU30lf

We felt that way about "the press" long before #Trump. You either didn't want to hear it, or you refused to believe it, so the responsibility lies with you. #journalists love to hold others responsible, but they'll never apply the same standard to themselves.

It's alarming how unwatchably hysterical and hyperbolic @CNN has become.
CNN was great in the 80s…when it simply reported the news.

Why shouldn’t Trump call them the enemy of the people when they have regarded him as an enemy of the state?

Freedom of the Press – is not a right granted to the MSM to report anything they want in pursuit of a predetermined agenda. It is intended to keep the press from becoming a tool for those in power. MSM are now a tool for one political party-unconstitutional enemy of the people.

It’s alarming when 90% of the media endorsed the other candidate, was shown to have coordinated talking points with DNC to smear Sanders and to push Clinton propaganda… and to claim over & over that Trump was threat to democracy. Zero objectivity …merits the reaction.

The previous president referred to small town Americans as small-minded ignorant bigots and his Veep accused opponents of wanting to make black people slaves again, and you gave approximately zero shits. https://t.co/jN9gy8ty9h

The previous president also watched as Eric Holder implicated Fox News reporter James Rosen in an espionage investigation so he could spy on him and go through his parents’ phone records. Oh, and the administration also excised an embarrassing question from Rosen about Iran from official video of the press conference.
Maybe spying on the press while enjoying daily tongue baths from the media was the thing that enchanted Barack Obama the most.
