Pop quiz — Which U.S. president is credited with the following quote? “Elections have consequences, and at the end of the day, I won.” Hint: It’s not Donald Trump.
So it seems a bit presumptuous of Democrats to be telling President Trump whom he should nominate to the U.S. Supreme Court. Word is that Sen. Chuck Schumer actually called Trump and urged him to nominate Merrick Garland — you know, the guy whose seat was “stolen” by Neil Gorsuch.
And doesn’t President Trump owe it to the Democrats to nominate Garland and heal those old wounds?
Um, no. But ABC News chief political analyst and national scold Matthew Dowd decided to indulge in the fantasy anyway on Thursday. Close your eyes for a minute and imagine life on Earth 2:
On July 9th, in a unexpected and surprising move in order to heal the divides in our country and bring folks together, President Trump nominated Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. He is expected to get overwhelming support. (A dream for my country.).

Yeah, that certainly would “bring folks together.” And isn’t that was SCOTUS picks are all about?
good lord this is cracked pic.twitter.com/ZPytQb4Tqs

Give the guy a break; it’s just a dream.
to be fair, my dreams never make sense either

And on the 10th, he will use the “pen and phone” to right the worst wrong our country has ever inflicted on a person and name Hillary president.

That would heal all the divides. Everybody in the nation would express support for the president all the time then!

Thanks for posting that. He has me blocked for some reason.

Us too.
More amusing than cracked. It seems to be a law of politico-journalistic nature that Republican presidents are expected to heal their deeply divided country with left-wing juidicial nominees. Democratic presidents, however, are exempt from this form of self-immolation.

By this logic, Bill Clinton or Barrack Obama should have nominated Robert Bork to the Court.
— Steven Chesser (@TheChesserGroup) July 5, 2018
@matthewdowd I don't remember calls for Obama to appoint a conservative judge to take Justice Scalia's seat in the Supreme Court to heal the divides and bring folks together. Absolutely no reason to nominate Garland; now or if another justice retires. @instapundit

The thought of the libs trying to come to grips with NOT opposing Trump for something so massive does elicit a chuckle, though.

Almost as good as Dave Wiegel's "actually, this would be beneficial to Republicans" follow up take

To be followed by President Kamala Harris nominating Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, and Raymond Kethledge,

It would “heal” the country for about five seconds, before they start calling him a Nazi again.

It would be funny to watch the people claiming to want this for "unity" attack Trump 5 minutes later. "We should've had this all along, he deserves no credit for this!"
— Jen DinNJ (@JenDinnj) July 5, 2018
"He is expected to get overwhelming support" is the most fantastical thing about that tweet. Trump could cure cancer tomorrow and the media would demand an investigation into whether Putin helped him.

I don't think SCOTUS seats are handed out for participation trophies.
— Jacob Not-a-Bot (@JacobNorris5) July 5, 2018
Dear @matthewjdowd if you want to heal the country, start by accepting the fact that you lost the election and please respect the wishes of the voters who supported the president in part because he pledged NOT to nominate judges like Garland. Sincerely, America

Isn't it odd that liberals always think that compromise entails giving them everything they want?
— Grant Bosse (@grantbosse) July 5, 2018
Dowd will have you know he’s an independent, not a liberal.
Merrick Garland should run for President. As an Independent, obviously. He'll win (too bad Trumpkins) and then appoint himself to the Supreme Court. When he's confirmed, Vice President Hillary Clinton will become President. Balance restored.
