Netflix being targeted for having too many scenes of smoking in its shows

Decider reported Sunday that anti-tobacco non-profit The Truth Initiative has Netflix in its sights because many of the streaming service’s original programs feature scenes of smoking.

Michael Haskoor reports:

According to a recent study by anti-tobacco non-profit The Truth Initiative, the streaming giant’s original shows feature the highest instances of tobacco use on TV, due partially to the fact that streaming services (including Hulu and Amazon) aren’t bound by the same content restrictions as broadcast television.

Results showed that Netflix had 319 “smoking incidents”, meaning any implied use of a tobacco product, which is more than twice the number found in broadcast and cable TV shows. Stranger Things topped the list with a whopping 182 “smoking incidents”, with AMC‘s The Walking Dead coming in second, raking up a total of 94 scenes involving tobacco use.

When’s the march on Washington to demand that Netflix cut back on scenes of cigarette use?
