Molten-hot take from Salon and Ed Asner: America was founded on gun control

There must be some sort of race to get all of the hottest takes published before the end of the year. Salon is known for its hot takes, but give them an anti-Second Amendment piece co-written by none other than Ed Asner, and you’ve got something so hot it melts right through reality.

OK, let’s hear him out. He’s essentially relying entirely on a draft of the Second Amendment written by James Madison to prove his case:

Here is Madison’s first draft of the Second Amendment:

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, a well-armed and well-regulated militia being the best security of a free country; but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms shall be compelled to render military service in person.”

Madison’s intent could not be more obvious: his Second Amendment refers only to state militias. If not, why include that exemption for what we now call “conscientious objectors?”

We’ll be the ones to break it to Asner — there were other founders who made sure that wasn’t the final draft of the Second Amendment. Also, it’s still right there in black-and-white: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Madison wasn’t talking about hunting when he wrote that.
