Another combat veteran says military-style assault rifles have no place on America's streets

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) walked out a the House’s moment of silence for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting and vowed never to attend another.

Instead, the Marine Corps captain took his plea for gun control straight to the people, tweeting a photo of himself carrying an assault rifle in Iraq and arguing that such weapons have no place on America’s streets. Tweeters both thanked him for his service and accused him of deliberately misleading the public with photo of a weapon that already can’t be carried on America’s streets.

It’s disappointing, then, to see another combat veteran and member of Congress trying to make the same argument. This time, it’s Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), who has joined her colleagues on the House floor (literally).

Once again, “assault rifles” issued to the military are not the same as the “very loud” and very popular (among reporters) AR-15, despite the informative Vox graphic showing how an AR-15 can be tricked out (illegally) with a grenade launcher.

Agreed: assault weapons do not belong on our streets. The thing is, there are a lot of combat veterans out there who question the very nebulous definition of “assault weapon” being bandied about in the press and in Washington, D.C.

No more deadly? But an AR-15 can fire 700 rounds a minute, according to Rep. Alan Grayson. Or course, since the AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle, you’d have to be able to pull the trigger 700 times a minute to make that happen.

What about that claim that assault rifles were designed to rip through human beings?

It might seem like a cheap shot (no pun intended), but Illinois has a much bigger problem than “assault weapons” on the streets. As Twitchy noted, Chicago alone recorded its 300th homicide of the year over Father’s Day weekend, during which nearly 60 people were shot.
