Does anyone really need a gun? Democrats ponder the question at platform meeting

The normally staid C-SPAN was America’s source for thrills Wednesday as the cable network carried the Democrat platform committee meeting. What does the DNC have in store this year?

They certainly did try to keep party officials from restoring the words “God” and “Jerusalem” to the party’s platform, which was accomplished through a very sketchy series of voice votes (drowned out amid a chorus of boos). So what’s in store this year?

Forgot about that pesky constitutional right to bear arms; we’re back to the argument that no one really needs a gun, so why should they be allowed to have one? To be fair, the committee is early in the process of hammering out its platform, so members are free to throw any idea, no matter how stupid, out there for consideration. The Washington Free Beacon reports:

“I really don’t personally think anyone should have a gun,” Bonnie Schaefer, former Claire’s Stores CEO and North Carolina resort and spa owner, said. “I mean that’s just my own philosophy.”

Schaefer proceeded to argue that nothing good can come from having guns available to the public.

“Nothing is ever solved when you have a gun in your hand, except the worst possible scenario,” she added.

Nothing is ever solved? Tell that to Vice President Joe “Buy a Shotgun” Biden. If zombie hordes attack during an earthquake, you’re going to want a firearm that doesn’t require careful aim as the ground shifts beneath your feet.

Gun control will no doubt be a major component of the Democrats’ party platform, but can we please stop allocating rights based on what people “need” and “don’t need”? That’s not how the Constitution works.
