Neither Hillary Clinton nor Bernie Sanders seems to enjoy appearing on Fox News, but both candidates made an appearance at Bret Baier’s #DemTownHall Monday night. The timing was good for Sanders, as it gave him an opportunity to clarify his claim that “white people don’t know what it’s like to be poor.” On the contrary, President Obama’s administration has made immense strides in acquainting all races of people what it’s like to be poor.

Sanders reflexively claimed that no one has talked more about poverty than he has, and introduced a sort of formula to clarify his statement. That is, white people do understand poverty, but to be truly poor, you need to couple that lack of money with a sense of desperation and the continual threat posed by white police officers.

@FoxNewsInsider @BretBaier @BernieSanders his answer meant; 'I'm losing, so I'm desperate for votes. We call that pandering. I'm good at it'

Sanders does not believe in trickle down economics. But he believes in trickle up poverty.

Sanders says it's not what he meant & he knows "about white poverty. It exists in my state. It exists all over the country." #DemTownHall

What is it that is so appealing to Democrat voters about that campaign strategy? Emphasize the tens of millions living in poverty after seven years of a Democratic administration, and then run as a Democrat.

@politico What is this tweet accomplishing? #Bernie SAID he was raised in poverty by Jewish immigrants who escaped WWII & Hitler. Not poor?

Would you just let the man pander for votes?
@politico His point was that whites do not know the depth of the AA experience. He knows there are poor whites, but even they do not know.

@politico @SchachtNathan sanders obviously never goes outside Burlington to the rural areas of VT – plenty of heart breaking white poverty

@politico Agree. He looks down on blacks and mentally places them in the 'ghetto'.
But he does not see the many poor whites in the ghetto.— Janet Naidu (@seashore22) March 8, 2016
