Screen Actors Guild makes no apology for lack of diversity

While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences exclaimed that the organization itself was “heartbroken” to find that it had again nominated only white actors and actresses for awards, the Screen Actors Guild had no such problem as it handed out its prizes tonight.

Idris Elba, a fan favorite to take over as the next James Bond, was the talk of the evening, taking home awards for best actor in a TV series (“Luther”) and supporting actor in a film (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”).

Best actress in a drama (“How to Get Away with Murder”) was Viola Davis.

Best actress in a miniseries (“Bessie”) went to Queen Latifah.

Kevin Spacey won for best actor in a drama (“House of Cards”).

The winners of the best comedy ensemble (“Orange Is the New Black”), which included best comedy actress Uzo Aduba, directly addressed the Academy controversy.

Now that’s diverse — but if “Downton Abbey,” which is as white as 9 Democrat debates, wins for best drama ensemble (spoiler warning: it just did), it’ll just cancel out the whole damn thing.

Update:

We almost forgot to mention … they gave this climate scientist kid a prize too, for best speech to the United Nations or something.
