Report: Militant killed in highway shootout; Militia leaders in custody

Les Zaitz of the Oregonian newspaper reports tonight that one militant is dead following a highway shootout near Burns, Ore., and the leaders of the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge are in police custody.

Arrested were Ryan Bundy, who suffered a minor gunshot wound during a traffic stop by the FBI and Oregon State Police; his brother, Ammon Bundy; Ryan W. Payne; Brian Cavalier; and Shawna J. Cox. All were charged with conspiracy to impede federal officers, a felony.

Zaitz writes that the group of militia leaders was bound for a community meeting in John Day set up by local residents. Several hundred had gathered at the John Day Senior Center, who were subsequently told the the “guest speakers” would not be appearing.

 

Others may have been arrested as well.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending identification by the medical examiner’s office.
