New phase of terrorism calls for revised terrorism advisory system

Echoing President Obama’s Sunday night address from the Oval Office on the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced that America finds itself in a “new phase” of terrorism that relies less on 9/11-scale attacks and more on smaller acts like mass shootings.

“We’re dealing with the prospect of terrorist-inspired attacks by someone who may be totally below our radar and could act on a moment’s notice,” said Johnson.

The New York Times reports that “under the current system, there are two levels for threats: imminent and elevated. A new level will be added to cover less serious threats, though officials declined to say what it will be called.”

A review of the current National Terrorism Advisory System has allegedly been underway for quite some time to see how it can be improved.

The new system might take some time to roll out as DHS employees investigate each other for potential terrorist ties.
