The Black Lives Matter movement has made it clear that “All Lives Matter” is not an acceptable substitute. Martin O’Malley, one of the five white faces on CNN’s debate stage Tuesday night, tried to calm an angry crowd at Netroots Nation this summer by saying that all lives matter and soon found himself apologizing for his “gaffe.”
Debate moderator Anderson Cooper did bring up race, but rather than asking a question himself, he for no good reason directed the audience to Don Lemon, who brought up a young black man on a video feed to ask, “All Lives Matter or Black Lives Matter?” Bernie Sanders was up first and quickly answered, “Black lives matter.”
.@CNN, is there really only going to be one question about race tonight? #DemDebate

DeRay Mckesson, the Black Lives Matter leader who has recently been spending his time meeting with Democrat presidential candidates to push the Campaign Zero initiative, noticed that Cooper then passed a different question to Hillary Clinton.
I need to replay the tape but I think Anderson asked Clinton a different question re: race than the video question. #DemDebate

@deray He did. He asked her what she would do for black people that President Obama hasn't.

@deray She still should have directly answered the video question #BlackLivesMatter #DemDebate

@deray He did. She got a more policy-based question, rather than #AllLivesMatter vs. #BlackLivesMatter

@deray he did!!! He redirected the question when he got to her. He did not ask her if BLM
— Khalia Ii (@KhaliaIi) October 14, 2015
@deray you are correct. Only 2 candidates (Sanders and Webb- I think) were directly asked the question. Hillary got asked a different one
— Coach Curvy Smart (@iBiteiStrike) October 14, 2015
@deray Yeah, that's exactly what happened. He asked her about how she could address racism better than Obama has.
— H. Poteat (@NSQE) October 14, 2015
@deray they did rephrase the question for her!
— Wilnelia Rivera (@wilnelia_rivera) October 14, 2015
@deray he did. he pivoted away from #blacklivesmatter. #demdebate
— AllSportsEverything (@ItsShanaRenee) October 14, 2015
@deray yes a softball question. bullshit
— Cousin Cole (@COUSINCOLE) October 14, 2015
@deray he did. I was eager for her answer.
— W.C. Red ?? (@WCRed816) October 14, 2015
@deray he did ask her a different question. well, he phrased it differently. which is unfortunate.
— ????? ??? NOW AT @ahmadsorpheus (@anemonechorus) October 14, 2015
@deray yup, he did. He gave her a pass to not have to choose either. Boo.

@deray He did. Blatantly.
— Fraud Guaranteed. (@fuckYOUimgreat) October 14, 2015
@deray you are correct. Webb was the only one who had the courage to say all lives matter, before expounding. Hillary dodged.
