Slow day for homicides? Baltimore Police Department looks into Ben Carson's holdup claim

Seriously? How many times have police department spokesmen put off a reporter’s question with the excuse that they can’t discuss the details of an ongoing investigation or simply have no comment or further information.

It’s frustrating, but it’s something we can understand. What we’re questioning is why the Baltimore Police Department is tweeting that it has already checked into its own records for evidence that presidential candidate Ben Carson once found himself in the middle of a hold-up at a Popeye’s in Baltimore. Doesn’t this information usually come through reporters who tracked down the information?

Carson is already the victim of “Popeye’s truthers” who refuse to believe the neurosurgeon ever stepped foot in a Popeye’s franchise, let alone had a gun pointed against his ribs. The classy GQ magazine aligned itself with the truthers with a blunt, R-rated tweet.

We are sure, though, that most of the media will interpret “there was not enough info to identify a police report” to read, “Baltimore police have no records backing up Carson’s claim” … even after the department’s follow-up tweet explaining that, essentially, reporters can stop calling now.

Editor’s note: We have fixed an error in this post where we mistakenly referred to Boston in place of Baltimore. Twitchy regrets the error.
