President who cleared families to pay terrorists ransom defends leaving Iran hostages off the table

As Twitchy reported, President Obama snapped at CBS News’ Major Garrett at a press conference on Iran this afternoon for interrupting his victory lap with a valid question: Why weren’t the four Americans known to be held hostage by Iran part of his historic deal? Garrett was even scolded by other members of the press for his audacity, with CNN’s Dana Bash calling Garrett’s question “disrespectful.”

As much fuss as was made over the question being asked, the president did answer it:

Now, if the question is why we did not tie the negotiations to their release, think about the logic that that creates. Suddenly, Iran realizes you know what? Maybe we can get additional concessions out of the Americans by holding these individuals …

And by the way, if we had walked away from the nuclear deal, we’d still be pushing them just as hard to get these folks out. That’s why those issues are not connected. But we are working every single day to try to get them out, and won’t stop until they’re out and rejoined with their families.

Suddenly, Iran realizes maybe they can get additional concessions by holding these individuals? So, it was better to leave the hostages off the table entirely than to risk giving up any more ground in the negotiations?

RedState’s Erick Erickson caught that bit too. Just last month, the Obama administration announced a review of its hostage policies which cleared the way for families of hostages to pay ransom to the terror groups that had kidnapped them — again, not exactly a show of strength by the administration in its confidence to free hostages.

Ouch.

Maybe try negotiating from a position of strength next time, being a superpower and all.
