President Obama spoke at an NAACP event in Philadelphia this afternoon at which he laid out his policy proposals to reform the criminal justice system, and there were many. Some mandatory sentences, he said, should be reduced or even eliminated. He said he would direct Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate the practice of solitary confinement. He also would like to see felons have their right to vote restored, and he’d like to see Congress take action this year.
He’d also like to see an end to prison rape and jokes about prison rape in popular culture.
Obama: "We should not be tolerating rape in prison — and we shouldn't be making jokes about it."

Pres Obama also calls for elimination of gangs in prisons – and for ending rape in prison – and an end to making jokes about rape in prison.

@markknoller We can just end rape in prison? I had no idea. We should seriously consider doing that.

@markknoller Can you ask the President in what context he became aware of the prison rape joke epidemic, that afflicts our country?
— “Bob” The Emotional Support Hamster (@bob_emotional) July 14, 2015
@markknoller probably easier at this point if we are all given a list of acceptable things to talk about, think, and believe.

@markknoller Problem solved.

This is not something we were expecting to hear in a speech on criminal justice reform. But hey, that could have been him behind bars.
Obama: People who he sees in the U.S. who end up in the prison industrial complex, "they could be me," if not for his forgiving environment.
