Since its inception in 1990, writes Eriq Gardner, the EB-5 visa program has allowed foreign nationals to become conditional permanent residents of the United States upon an investment of at least $500,000 for a qualifying project that creates American jobs.
The results of an investigation released last month, however, made some waves by discussing how Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid intervened over some Las Vegas projects and how Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe interjected for an electric car company.
“Beltway cronyism was embedded in EB-5’s DNA from the get-go,” observed Michelle Malkin in her April 1 syndicated column.
“The latest report from the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general — which outlines the meddling and pandering of No. 2 DHS official Alejandro Mayorkas, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, Democratic bagman Terry McAuliffe, Hillary Clinton’s brother Tony Rodham, former Pennsylvania. Gov. Ed Rendell and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, to name a few — provides yet more sordid evidence that the green cards-for-sale scheme should be completely scrapped.”
