'We aren't wards of the university': Student concealed carry advocate schools Florida senate panel

As Twitchy has reported, the Colorado legislature has recently and unsuccessfully tried to roll back some of the gun-control restrictions that were pushed through with the help of out-of-state gun-grabber Michael Bloomberg in 2013.

The fight over concealed carry on campus has been a particularly ugly one in Colorado. Testifying before a state legislative hearing on her right to arm herself, rape survivor Amanda Collins was told by then state Sen. Evie Hudak, “Chances are that if you would have had a gun, then he would have been able to get that from you and possibly use it against you.”

While efforts to restore gun rights in Colorado are failing along party lines, similar efforts in Florida are off to a good start, with proposed legislation to allow people with concealed weapon permits to bring their guns on college campuses passing the state senate’s higher education committee today, over the objections of student governments, faculty unions and campus police chiefs.

The Miami Herald’s Mary Ellen Klas covered the hearing.

Despite vehement opposition from college presidents, campus police chiefs and the university system’s Board of Governors, the Senate Higher Education panel on Monday approved a proposal that would allow concealed weapons on college campuses.

One of the most profound comments at the hearing came not from an NRA lobbyist but from Rebecca Hargrove, a member of Students for Concealed Carry at Florida State, who reminded legislators, “We aren’t wards of the university. We are citizens of the United States.”

Also displaying uncommon sense was former senate president Don Gaetz, who declared, “In the absence of evidence, one is left with the Constitution of the United States.”
