Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon today announced the activation of the National Guard and declared a state of emergency in advance of the grand jury’s announcement regarding Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. Meanwhile, protesters blocked intersections and obstructed traffic in what one reporter called a “dry run” for the Michael Brown decision.
With those ominous developments in the background, Brown family lawyer Anthony Gray appeared Monday with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “The Lead” to accuse Nixon of “preparing for war and not necessarily for peace.” Said Gray, “I only hope that it doesn’t generate the reaction that they’re looking for, preparing for. Sometimes you can push people into behaving a certain way just by preparing for just that kind of a reaction.”
Perhaps it’s that logic that has led protesters to demand that police not wear specialized riot gear and not use crowd control equipment such as armored vehicles, rubber bullets and tear gas. What kind of reaction would that garner?
