Sens. McCain, Flake urge Gov. Brewer to veto 'Turn the Gays Away' bill

Both of Arizona’s senators have weighed in on SB1062, colloquially known as the “Turn the Gays Away” bill, and hope that Gov. Jan Brewer vetoes the legislation. Brewer has until Friday to either sign or veto the bill, which would provide legal protection to individuals and businesses based on a modified definition of “exercise of religion.”

For example, a wedding photographer could refuse to provide services for a same-sex wedding by claiming that same-sex marriage violated his or her religious beliefs.

McCain’s daughter Meghan has called the bill “un-American and embarrassing for all of Arizona and the country” and tweeted again today about the legislation.

KPNX-TV’s Braham Resnick says that Arizona legislators are receiving some “nasty stuff” in emails, including this photo.

Business are starting to weigh in as well. The Marriott hotel chain has urged a veto, saying that SB1062 “would have profound negative impacts on the hospitality industry in Arizona and on the state’s overall economic climate for years to come.”

The White House has taken no position on the legislation.
