Little Sisters of the Poor handed a win against Obamacare contraceptive mandate

The Little Sisters of the Poor will not have to provide birth control against their religious beliefs while their case against the Department of Health and Human Services works its way through the appeals court system, it was announced today.

The Washington Post reports:

In a short and unsigned order, the court said the Little Sisters of the Poor must simply inform the Obama administration that they are a religious organization that should be exempt from the requirement.

The court order says the nuns do not have to sign a government form to which they objected because they said it authorizes a third-party to provide the contraceptive coverage.

Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards called the Little Sisters’ win a matter of paperwork rather than religious freedom.

The Supreme Court will take up the issue of the birth control mandate in a related case in March.
