Time editor to join Obama administration, handle public affairs at State

Yes, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney came to the White House from Time Magazine, and he’ll soon be joined by Time editor Richard Stengel, whose official title will be “under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs at the State Department.” We don’t know much about the job description, but we’re guessing State needs someone to raise the level of public discourse above a petulant, “What difference does it make?”

It seems reasonable. Entertainers and athletes like Katy Perry and Magic Johnson can handle domestic issues like Obamacare, and media lapdogs can step in to handle the foreign stuff.

Surprisingly, Time isn’t taking advantage of the perfect opportunity to close up shop. Instead, Nancy Gibbs will step into the role of managing editor.
