Older, mellower Weiner denies tossing salad as younger man

If there weren’t the possibility he could actually end up as mayor of New York City, we’d really enjoy Anthony Weiner’s public rehabilitation campaign. The New York Times on Thursday published a less-than-flattering profile of Weiner’s days in Congress, recalling an incident in 2005 when an angry Weiner became irritated with a staff member and allegedly threw a salad against the wall. Weiner downplayed that incident before a forum in Harlem today, BuzzFeed reports.

“The salad story’s apocryphal,” Weiner told BuzzFeed. “First of all, I don’t do salad. That’s the other thing about the story. I don’t do salads.”

It’s no wonder Weiner has emerged from exile to campaign; this next quote is the mark of a consumate politician — Clintonesque, even. If he did toss that salad, and he’s not saying he did, he was only doing it because he cares so much about the middle class.

“Look, I’m impatient for change, and I fight hard for the middle class and those struggling to make it, and I make no apology about that,” Weiner said. “I mean, I’m a much mellower person than I was when the salad did or did not wind up on the wall.”
