Uh-oh: Marco Rubio's press secretary expecting 'setback' from Obama on border security stipulation

Earlier today, as the Senate’s Gang of 8 unveiled its immigration reform proposal, it appeared that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio might be going wobbly on ensuring border enforcement was in place before the gate to the “pathway to citizenship” was thrown wide open. Rubio made the rounds this evening to clarify his stance, assuring Sean Hannity that a lack of specific border security targets in any immigration reform plan was a deal killer.

While Rubio was appearing on TV, his press secretary sent out word that President Obama’s speech tomorrow in Las Vegas could well be a setback. Politico is reporting tonight that “Obama does not favor linking legal status to border security, arguing that undocumented immigrants should not be kept in a state of limbo.” That certainly seems likely, as White House Press Secretary Jay Carney earlier today ducked a question about linking border security measures to the issuing of green cards.
