Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood-backed constitution looks likely to pass in referendum

Egyptians appear set to approve the country’s new constitution by a wide margin today via a nationwide referendum. The Muslim Brotherhood, which has backed President Mohamed Morsi and the proposed constitution, is reporting on the vote via its Twitter feed.

Those numbers seem to match those reported by Egyptian media. Much of the no vote seems to be coming from Egypt’s second-largest city, Alexandria, where violent clashes are reported to have left at least 19 injured.

Some media outlets, including Reuters and the Jerusalem Post, are reporting that the office of the Wafd opposition party was attacked with petrol bombs and birdshot late in the day.

As CBS reports, “The draft would empower Islamists to carry out the most widespread and strictest implementation of Islamic law that modern Egypt has seen.” We can’t confirm the text on this sign, but it’s being retweeted quite a bit.

Here is the tally by city according to the Muslim Brotherhood’s feed.
