Police have arrested the husband of Shaima Alawadi, an Iraqi woman who was found beaten to death in her home eight months ago in El Cajon, Calif. Family members had told police at the time they had found a note near Alawadi’s body warning the family to “go back where they came from.”
After an investigation, police determined that the case was one of domestic violence and not a hate crime. Initial reports of the death had inspired fear among Iraqi immigrants as well as a Facebook campaign called “One Million Hijabs for Shaima Alawadi.”
