As UN calls for limits on expression, 'Innocence of Muslims' filmmaker arrested for probation violation; Update: help without bail

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the man behind the anti-Islam film “Innocence of Muslims,” has been arrested for violating terms of his probation and is making an appearance in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles today.

Nakoula was led from his home by a group of federal officers on Sept. 15 for questioning but was neither arrested or detained at the time. Nakoula was on federal probation for a 2010 bank fraud conviction, and a condition of this probation was that he stay away from computers and the internet for five years.

President Obama has been relentless in blaming the video for violent protests which began Sept. 11, even addressing the video specifically in his address to the United Nations on Tuesday. Other world leaders used the General Assembly to call for greater protections against “hate speech” against Islam. Yemen’s President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi, for example, called for “limits for the freedom of expression, especially if such freedom blasphemes the beliefs of nations and defames their figures.”

So, is it any coincidence that an arrest comes now?

Update: ABC News in Los Angeles is reporting that Nakoula is being held without bail after the judge ruled that Nakoula is both a flight risk and poses a danger to society.
